C, F. Molair, 'of Barnwell, has a
mule that can qualify for a (Carnegie
modal, she having saved a
young calf from drowning a few days
ago. It seems that a neighbor had
pastured one of his cows and her
young calf on Mr, Moluir's place,
which i? farmed by' Will Taylor, no
gro. There was quite a deep, hole in
the pasture that was nearly filled with*
water hy the recent heavy rains. The
he calf ventured too near the hole
and fell in. The mule, whose name
is Rosa, was in another part of the
pasture at the time, but was attracted
to the scene by the nunirnful cries of
the distressed mother tow, Rose im
mediately grasped the situation and
with almost human intelligence at*
tempted to rescue the calf by catch*
ing hold of its ears with her Veth.
Although the ear was nearly bit'tcn
off, the calf slipped front her grip
and went under the water, whereupon
the mule dropped to her knees, im
mersed her head, seized the calf with
her teeth and threw it about ten feet

He is alleged to have killed the two
women, packed the bodies in boxes
and carried them to a point near
Medford, where he burled them. He
claims to have killed the women in
self defense.

eight houses; sometimes, as when peo
ple from the outlying districts come
to town, the number is almost doubled,

shores offer little chance for building"

deep for driving idles. So the lumber*

on them erect their houses of cedar
shakes. When a logger has cut ull
of the timber on a concession he must
move somewhere else; naturally a
.floating house saves time. and labor.
It can be towed readily behind a row*
boat ; and If the owner has a motor
t)oat, so much the better.
Some I'O years ago a man with
more business Instinct than his fel
lows saw the need of a store and
opened one alloat in a sheltered place
called Simoon soiyul. lie did a flour
ishing business from the first. Soon
a post olhce was added. Now a
"city" has sprung, from that humble
beginning: eight houses, and in slack
periods loggers bring more!
On boat nights, which occur once a
week when the steamer from the out
side world calls, "Simoon City" Is a
busy place; then its population Is
swelled to perhaps 100. There are
the regular loggers, great bearded
fellows In macklnaws and calked
boats, a sprinkling of Indians, a Jap
anese fisherman or two, the crew of
a forestry patrol boat and at times
guests from a pleasure launctj.

Indian dugouts and boxes here ai^
there have been made to bloom wltlA
gny flowers; and in such rude con
tainers there are also little vegetable
gardens, for the women of Simoon are
thrifty.
The muln attraction, perhaps, Is
the Hear Trap restaurant, a long,
rough room with log flooring, which
offers meals and soft drinks, nnd
which contains a phonograph to cheer

All Coming to Town.
Farm papulation In the United States
Is fulling at the rate of 1,000,000 a
year. This Is one time that statistics
seem to be fairly accurate. The peo
ple are crowding Into the cities, where
the remuneration Is better.
If this condition should not change,
how long, , at the rate of 1,000,000 a
year, will It be before all the popula
tion Is In the cities? Such a query
may seem a case of reduction ad nb
surdum. ?
Hut the predominance of the cities
in population is already a fact ; 58
per cent of the people in the United
States live In them. Half the men
are no longer needed to raise the
food for the* other half. Machinery
is on the way to making it possible for
one man to feed ten ? or even twenty.
Isn't the time foreseen when every
body will be able to live In the c\\j
If he wishes, and the farming contin
gent will fly out to the fields every
morning In airplanes? Nobody will
stay out there at night except a few
to guard the cattle and the barns.
All the rest will be In town at the
movies, the lectures, the athletic
meets, the concerts, soirees, and so on.

French children in the next school
year will face the study of Latin and
Greek that made their fathers labor.
They may dread these dead languages,
but have no choice, as the minister
of public Instruction has decreed the
restoration of the classical languages
and absolutely obligatory upon girls
and boys alike during the six years
of secondary education, which, rough
ly, is equivalent to the upi>er grades
In the American public schools and
the first half of the high school course.
The teachers proved to be the chil
dren's friends, for they reminded the
minister that they had voted 13 to
1 against Latin and Greek and In favor
of the retention of the modern course.
I'nrllament debated the change Inter
mittently for nearly two years, but
the minister, despairing of getting a
decision, Issued a decree In the par
liamentary recess, declaring that the
French can best know thHr language
snd appreciate the!r literature with

A gang of alleged kidnappers, con
sisting of S K, Hudson, (\ F. Hudson
and 0. 0. Hudson, brothers, was ar
rested in Macon, (la., Sunday night by
the police. The city has been terror
ised fov many weeks by the operations
of kidnapping whipping parties. Of
late the police have organized motor
cycle squads and instituted other pre
cautions in the efforts to apprehend
the outlaws. A jiegro had just been
whipped and tvhei) a masked man at
tempted to pull Kmory Koberts, a
! negro, from a car for the same pur
pose, Koberts stepped on the gas. The
man whistled for his companions and

with a pistol while the other two"" men
came along behind in another car.
Passing persons notified the police,
and a party of twenty followed., catch
ing up with the two cars at a point

an embankment. The three men were
arrested. They were recognized a#
haying court records but are not detl
nitely believed to be connected with
other gangs that have been giviiig-'
trouble.
