In the spring of 1021 the bureau ot biological survey directed attotUIon to tht" fact that the blue fox?-s <m some of the Aleutian Islands ?n* deteriorat ing through Inbreeding, and that there was a desire on the part of the no* tlves and others to xwure animals from the I'rlhllof Islands for restock* lug purposes. In order to assist In building up the blue fox industry of Hit* AUwiiims. where climatic conditions appear to he favorable, the Introduction of hew blood from the I'rlbllofs was accord ingly undertaken by the bureau of fisheries, and eight llvo blue foxes wore placed aboard the coast guard cutter Hear at St. George Island Sep tember lft, 19^1. One pair went to L. A. I.avlgne, lessee of Unalga Is land; one pair to the Fnalaska Native Brotherhood, less??cH of Avatanak ls? land, and two pairs to N. E. Bol* Hhanln, lessee of Kavalga and other Islands. The purchasers ? supplied shipping cases and transportation was at their risk. All the foxes were received at Una laska in good order and were prompt ly placed on the Islands under lease to the various persons concerned. The price charged for each animal was $H8.12. this being the average realized for I'rlhllof blue fox skins at the sale at St, Louis February 21, 1921. The amount received for the eight foxes was $704.90; $5 was allowed natives of the Prlhllof Islands for each fox secured, and the net proceeds, amount ing to $001.90, > were turned Into the treasury of the United States.?Fish eries Service Bulletin.
