The facts in the ense as reported hire arc to the effect thut l)r. Pratt upon .returning homo from preaching found John Cottou at his hou?e. Dr. Pratt, having warned Cotton, it in alleged, to stay ti\va,v frtmi his house, shot at CVottou ami then went to bis room upstairs, John Hell, brother of the young woman Cotton was railing on, heard the excitement in the parlor and oame downstairs. Upon opening the pador door Qottou, the report states, thinking it wits Dr. Pratt, fired at Pel!, the hull entering the heart and killing liini instantly. Dr. Pratt then returned to the scene of 'the .shooting, it is stated, and again fired at Cotton, mortally wounding him, but "before Cotton died he fired four shots n-t Dr. Pratt, who fell in\ the hall way. Miss Hdl was wounded iu the arm and her mother received a .slight wound In the shoulder. Dr. l'ratt is a nativ,e of this. State and came to Williamsburg County soon after his graduation in medicine, locat ing in the Ne smith neighborhood, where he built up an extensive practice. About five years ago he married Miss Katherine Hell and for several years thereafter they niaile their home in his old home com munity. He then returned to St. Ste phens and lived with his brother-in l.vw, John Hell, and the hitter's mother and sister. Young Cotton was a son of Con ductor J. W. Indianapols, Ind., Dec. 17. ? One long weird, shrieking whistle, then other less strident, finally practically all sirens in the city mingled ?with the ringing of a nunjber of bells, broke the stillness of the early morning in Indianapolis t-odcy. This was followed by the continual jangling of |flepbone bells in a local newspaper office. \ "I guess its a notice of the end of the world," said one woman. "The whistles are cabling the j>eople to church and I'm going." It developed later that n throttle on a whistle at a railroad roundhouse had bccome stiwk, starting the din, in which the other whistles joined. Klected Bridge Keeper. The county board of Commissioners met in extra session Monday last to look after condemnation proceeding? against two land owners through Whose premises the new road to the river will pass. They also elected Mr. John T. Cameron, of LugofF, as bridge keeper, for the new bridge when it opens for traffic. Mr. Cameron was hired at a salary of $(10 per week. He will select his assistant to be on duty at night, and this assistant will have to meet with the approval of the board. The assist ant will be paid by Mr. Cameron. The bridge will soon be ready for traffic and probably will be ready before the new road is completed. The tirst serious auto accident oij Main Street occurred last Saturday ufternnon when a Huick car Owned by John Tinker and driven by George Addison run into Mr. John Holland and knocked him down, causing wrhat was thought at first to be fatal injuries. ' The cur was turning the corner of Hut* ledge i lid Main Streets when Mr. Holland was struck. Witnesses say that the car was not running fast .but was on the wrong side for turning a corner. Mr. Holland wu.s doubled up umler the front of the. car ami dragged k short distance. He was rendered unconscious, but was taken to the hospital where he was found to he only sligthtl.v injured. The driver of the car wan placed in jtiil to await the outcome <?f Mr.x Holland's injuries. This accident sugigoHts the need of a "drive to the right" sign being placed in the middle of the street at this corner, where the traffic is at times unusually crowded. ? Mrs. WatkltiK Dead. .Mrs. William Watkins, the wife of Wu?. J. Watfkint^ who resides near Luck now, ij. C., died at the homo of Mm. Watkin's sister Mrs. J. Matthews of Italeigh, N. C.f Wednesday night De comber the third She had been 'in ill health for ?ev<*ral months and had gone to Italeigh for an operation, brtt as she was too weak just then, the operation wkn prolong**!. She gradually grew weaker and paaaed away before the op eratiou was performed. Mrs. Watkinn l? survived by a hus band and ftve children, the oldest being about 14 years of age and a boat of rel atives and friends to mourn for her. Interment waft held at High Hill church where she was a member and a righteous worker. The fuheral services were conducted by Itev. Henry Hey Woldf, a pastor, of that church. We extend our deepest sympathy to that bereaved family. Cor. ("barged Wfth Larceny. Ella Frasier, colored, was arrested last week on a warrant charging her with larceny from the house. The woman was employed as maid at the I'ark View Inn. One of the guests had two diamond rings stolen out of her room and the negro woman was suwpected. Chief of Police W hi taker made a search of her home in the lower part of the city, but the rings were n<it recovered. While searching for the rings he came across a large lot of fine table linen and bed clothing/ Mm.
