South Carolina, 17 mileM south of here, Thursday night. Fragmentary details of the catast raphe reached Mou toe this morning. Mr. Funderburke wax notified of hi? loss yesterday afternoou and at out* journeyed to bin farm. It wan a deso late scene that greeted his eye aloug the banks of the rtrearn in the pasture of his fann. He found that his entire herd had beeu seixed as they slept and washed down the stream. When he arrived a party of men were engaged in extricating a 1,500 pound Hereford hull of the herd from where the waters had lodged him iu a mass of logs 15 feet above, thr ground. The animal was badly hruiaed but not ae-; riously, when. freed. Iu a raft of logs and debris he found the carcaaaea of five of his cattle, two of them registered stock. A cow was found hanging in a trre with her head between two limbs. Her imik had prob ably been broken. The bodies of dead turkeys were observed in the tops of trees wheje they, had been left by the receding water. During -the. search yesterday aftcrhoon Mr. Funderburk failed to find five of his .cattlo. When he left to. return to Mon roe it was still impossible to cross to the opposite bank of the stream. It was thought that the cattle would be found lodged in drifts on that side. It is thought that a cloudburst some where up the stream must have caused the sudden rise. The tenant who lives on Mr. Funderburke's place stated that although it was raining steadily the night before the stream was not tip to any- extent. About 12 o'clock he was aroused by the sounds of the distressed animals and the rushing waters. Thp stream must have risen in a rush. Had it not the cattle would have had an op portunity to take to the hills.. Mr. Funderburke suffered losses total ing around $l,fi(K). Most of f his was entailed in the lo^?\ of the cattle which were high grade stock, ^rops along the banks of the stream were damaged to it great" extent. A House Party. Mr. and Mrs. T. II.
