LACK or KQUIPMENT Caused Heavy Losses to Division in Argonne Forest Says Allen. Topeka, Jan. 16.? -Lack of equipment, airplanes and transportation facilities were responsible for the heavy losses suffered by the 35th division in its drive against the Germans in the Argonne forest, declared Governor Henry J. Allen , in an address at the city auditorium. This address, following the inaugoral ex * ereises, was the first Mr. Allen haB made on his experiences on the battle front while in the Y. M. G. A. service. Governor Allen asserted that the 35th sofTerod 7,000 casualties in the six days' battle, or half the strength of the di Vision. Governor Allen also criticised the cen sorship, charging that it "became as ar rogant and absolute as the censorship *>f Germany, lacking only the German iHtelligence." On September 25, the 35th division started to enter the Argoane, said Gov ernor Allen. Governor Allen declared that the Ger mans maintained dominion of the air i on the American front. "We saw much in the papers that came to us of Ameri can domination of the air. But we did not know that throughout the -war it was going to be a dominion of hot air", he said. "There was no lack of bravery on the part of our aviators. Often times they went up knowing that one Amerl t*ajn plane and one or two American aviators were pitted against three, four or five German planes. "Not only did the airplane service pay the price but the infantry also paid the price in human life for the protec tion they expected and did not get, for there was no airplane guard for them."
