CIRCUS DAY Monday Oct. 14 Marks the Coming of Spark's World Famous Shows. Circus day dawns With an indefinable stir in the air that set* the small boy's heart t<> heating faster, and awaken s.| pleasant memories in the minds of the gray beards who have not forgotten child hood's happy days. The people of this city ami commun ity will undoubtedly be treated to a tremendous surprise' in the above show, a* report has it that it is .not only , triple in' fdze this season, but thai it| ntill retains those features that made it such a welcome visitor in past years, viz: Its freedom from aJl semblance <f gamblers and fakire, the high class 'moral entertainment afforded and its honorable methods of doing business. The management of The Sparks World Famous Shows have not only ventured into a field of greater Endeavor, but in po doing, it is said, have outdistanced tented rivals in a manner that leaves nothing to the imagination, with the ad ditional telling advantage of being triple in size. All new in the matter of equip ment and presentation, and still retain ing the wonderful trained wild animal exhibition, which has done much tx> cause this show to become famous, it i* the most remayka^le amusement en terprise of its kind in the world today. The big >-<t iwt parade, while a feature of marvelous beauty and enormous ex pense. Surely everyone has been shocked when upon asking the price of an -article found it doubled that of pro war days. And those conditions will prevail all through tho w 1 11 tor*? and tho. government has asked the co-operation ??f both th e manufacturer and consumers. As a result of the conservation iVioas ures, designers have created a variety of cape designs, which were phown in their openings. Their graceful lines appeal .to* /ill Wpmen &nd they may be made from a minimum amount of material. One of the smart women seen at an avia tion fete not. long ago wore a beige du vetyn,' the lower edge of which just drip ped with heavy silken fringe of a darker shade. The body, of the cape was shirred on a deep yoke which extended around the shoulders. The long ends were edged with fringe to ogrrewpond with the lower edge. Willing says the modern woman, ,/or she knows only too well the charm of the substitutes. And the substitutes? Vel vet and satins. What is there that is more attractive, more absolutely feminine than velvet? The large majority of dresses are de veloped in these fascinating stufTs. and owing to the richness and elegance of these fabrics little trimming is required, illustrated here are two exceptionally good designs which might well deserve development in the populnr materials. The lirst one is a combination of serge aifd satin with the toucn or Worsted em broidery on the panel. The other is nn entire satin frock and trimmed with the raging novelty, fringe. 'Roth are smart nnd simple and would be suitably devel oped entirely of velvet. personaiTmention. v Mr. and Mrs. X. It. Ooodale, Mrs. C. M. Coleman and Mr. and Mrs. T. Johnson, a farmer of the Sliddottdorf section . of Chesterfield County, was foully murdered by parties unknown on Thursday night of * last week. He carried a .load of cotton to thejjUi 011 that date and failed to re -nirn liome. Mr. Johnson's body was foiugl .Monday afternoon under, a pile of lumber near the giu bouse, the murderer having placed it there after he had crushed his skull with a piece of pil ing. Mr. Johnson was about 37 years of age and was unmarried. He owned con siderable property and was considered i a quiet, inoffensive citizen. Intense excitement has been caused by the foul 'and cowardly . crime and if the perpetrator is caught, he will likely meet with a swift and just punishment at the hands of the outraged citizens. A reward of $1,000 has been offered for the apprehension of the z murderer, wht?, if described as follows, when last seen : . . /? Interest has been aroused by an ap paratus that has lately been developed to save ocean vessels from sinking after being torpedoed or damaged by collision. The contrivance, which Is shown in Popular Mechanics Maga zlne, comprises a laminated steel disk, to the center of which Is attached a series of rubberized crtnvas cone shaped buckets. In use, the end cone on the chain would be lowered Intc the water In the vicinity of the hole In a ship's hull. Upon being caught by the Inrushlng water, It would be pulled through the opening. The whole string ortmckets would then bejowered along with the disk so that the latter would be pulled In place over thtt break.' The^Cones, being of flexible m^| terlal, would be able to pass through an aperture, regardless of its shape. The disk, once In place, would be held by the pressure of the water against the hull. Improved Soldering Process. A form of the Schoop metal-spraying process la claimed to be effective in soldering. The soldering pistol does not require the compressed air Jet, as the fuel-gas used Is under pi castas and gives the flame sufficient drlTlK force to spread the solder over the surfaces- to be soldered*. A small driv ing mechanism feeds the wire solder continuously Into the flame. The method Is convenient, rapid and Inez pensive and Is free from the tedious and disagreeable features of soldering bjr hand. Want Technical Training for Women.
