The new offensive was lanucbcd from the east of Arras od the Scarpf river and southward to the fojeul. All along the front the British premier! forward, at some place* to a depth of inqrc than two mile* and captured a half doxeu or more village*, among them Monchy le-Preux, Ouewap|K> and Wancourt. Acro*s Jhe Cojaul, the new British attacks on the old battle front brought tbein to the village* of Mory and St. Lcger* and farther south the ?tnall town of Favreuil, one and a half miles north east of Bapaume, from which the Brit ish p reaaed on eastward about a wile. Farther south the British are reported unofficially to have reached the western outskirts of Thllloy in the nipper move ment they are carrying out against Ha paume. With Haig's men standing well .within gun rauge of the town it seems likely that the Germans will be forced to evacuate Bapauuic in short order Additional gains also have been made by the British cant of Albert ami on both Hides of the Somme river. In fact, notwithstanding the effort* of the Ger muiis through the use of large rein forcements to hold them iu check, the British and French all al?nf the line from Albert to 8oissons have materially bettered their positions and carried fur ther forward their plan of making the t Picardy battle ground uuteuable for the | enemy. j The French again are hammering I away at the environs of Roye, one of the strong points of the Somroe-Oiso } front, the capture of which doubtless would cause the giving up by the en emy of the entire salient from the Somme in the north, to Noyon.v Fits- I noy-Les-Roye, to the north, and St.; Mard to the south of Roye, both of which have been captured by the French, despite the desperate resistance of the Germans, and Roye, like Bapaume in the north, apparently is in danger of being pinched out of the line in an envelop ing movement. More than GOO prisoners were taken by the French in the op eration. The Germans have thrown further heavy counter-attacks against the French in the region north of Soissons, where the French continue their pressure north ward, in maneuvers which seriously threaten to outflank the- Gbemin-Des Pames and Laon sectors and to put the entire German line from Ypres to Rheims in jeopardy. All the attacks have been sustained by General Mangin's forces and the French even have pushed back the Germans beyond the points from which they started. The famous Prus sian guard has been thrown into the bat tle to check the French, but, as in their efforts against thp French and Ameri cans in the Vesle sector, they met with defeat. The ope-ritions of the British on the northern part of the front from the east of Arras to the region of Bulle court have brought them virtually upon or very near the old Hindenburg line. There is still considerable activity on the eastern part of the battle front In the Vosges, where forces of Ameri cans recently have been fighting. The. operations, however, continue of the na ture of yi iul? and surprise attacks. Several of the latter maneuvers have been put down by the French. There has beep an inerease in the activity in the Albnnian theater. Her^ the Austrians twice attacked the Franco Italian troops but were repulsed. Later the French slightly withdrew their line in order to maintain liaison with the Italians. Aug. 22. ? Fire of unknown or igin destroyed the Piedmont Springs Ho tel. popular summer resort, situated three miles ea?t of King's Creek, 'at 1 o'clock this afternoon. The building was a two story frame structure and contained 40 rooms. Practically all the furnishings of the hotel were lost. The hotel was owned by a company of (JafTney men and this season was under the manage ment of John Castle* of Smyrna.
