Vogcl ! narrowly escaped death this morning, when the cook stove exploded and tore n big hole in the side of the kit c*h- | <*ii wall and pots, kettles and lids! wen' hurled against the rolling and j walls on all sides. Mrs. Vogel became j frightened at the popping of the stove i and caught up a child, which was with j her. and ran Into an adjoining room and slanuncd the door just as the ex plosion took phi ct\ The breakfast for the family which was cooking on the stove was scattered all over the kitch en and about the yard. The pipes to the tank were frozen and the making of a' big fire In the stove caused the explosion. Mrs. Vo gel had just been leaning over the stove, preparing breakfast, when the p'opping began and she left the room. All of the window panes in the room were smashed out and some of the sashes went out entire. Window panes in the dining room and even in the second story were broken. The water tank was not moved from its place inst lx'slde the stove, although the pipes connecting the two were wrench ed loose. Some of the pots and other things on the stove stuck in the ceiling and walls and a kettle was found some distance out in the yard. The explo sion made a terifho noise and the whole neighborhood was aroused and excited until it was found that no one was injured, except one negro who said he had been hit by a flying mis si e. Governor Manning, on Wednesday night received the following telegram from the New York Times: "Germany has presented a note tonight withdraw ing her submarine pledges and indicat ing her intentions of sinking without warning by mine or torpedo, any vessel including American, carrying goods or passengers into a zone extending about twenty miles around the coast . of France and the British Nles after Feb ruary 1. The governor replied .as fol lows: "Germany's note presents a situ ation of extreme gravity and may pre cipitate complications resulting .in war.
