New York, July 17. ? July lived up' to tradition this year, affording us an opportunity to wear our sheerest lin gerie frocks and our smartest sports eost nines during the holidays. The nearhy resorts were crowded on the Fourth, whleh chanced to lie an Ideal day. with well dressed men and wo men. A tiny HUg, of ?? t?it of red, white and blue, was a detail of most cos tumes; tho men wore it on eoat lapel, in hat hand, or protruding from a ]HH-ket ; the women pinned It daintily to the underbodleo of tho sheer blouse or frock, from where its colors shone out softly and effectively ; or tucked a small silk flag Into the girdle of the | white frock, or Into the pocket of tho ; sport.-) eoat. Our patriotism was Just a little more pronounced than usual this year, owing, no doubt, to the ru mors of war which have been comlug to us lately, and the military prepara tions going on h Unit us. There were not many among the hol iday crowds, however, who looked un comfortably "dressed-up Fashion has at last managed to comhinfe comforts with grace and charm. The sports cos tume predominated : various styles of middy and Russian blouses wore worn with trim fitting skirts; chic suits of strl]a>d and plain mohair, i>ongee or linen, with Norfolk coats and pleated skirts, were favored; ami sweater coats, with self or contrasting sklrta, were also |>o polar. One especially pretty cos tume developed In plain natural color ed pongee, trimmed ami combined with a skirt of dark blue foulard dotted with bright green, is illustrated hero, It Is a slip-on model with cool, becom ing sleeves, and an effective collar. The skirt is a simple, gathered design, short and full, but unusually graceful.
