At the Jaguar Trap. witn a Mound the Brute was upon hor. Ho darted to the very edge of the pit. unci -with ttie surefootedness of an an i i ii H i crouched there, throwing his eutiro body forward and catching her by the shoulders Ju?t as she dis appeared from sight. He drew her back to terra fir ma, No sooner had he done so, however, than Ponto was upon them boih, knife in hand, bis teeth Htornify gnashing with rage. He hurled a savage knife-thrust at the Brute ? and missed. Then he threw himself upon Annette and half tore her in his frenzy from the Brute's grasp, cutting and slashing at them both with ^ils wicked knife. "I've got you now, you little wild cat," he panted in guttural Spanish "down you go." He thrust her savagely into the pit. Onco more the Hrute caught her ? and in so doing swung the throe of them around, so that their positions were reversed. Ponto, throwing caution to the winds, kept lunging at the two with his Hharp weapon. "I'll get you both," he yelled. "I'll get you both." A moment lal< r ho was clawing at the air? but It was too late. Making frantic struggle to preserve his bal ance, ? he tottered ovor backward. Jjhere was the crash of a hoavy body ailing ? a tearing thudding sound ? a ghastly, hideous scream ? then si lence. > CHAPTER LI. The Jaguar's Mate. A lleutonant from the battleship Missouri clapped Nvhal on the. shoul der. "Well,' he said, "ensign, we're still following your girl. Pleasant occu pation for you. oh." "Looks an ir I'd do it all my life," said Neal. "but sotao duy 1 hope to catch up to hor." The otlicers we're iu charge of a small squad of men who hud landed at Santa Maria in Ix>wer California, under orders from Washington, and under advices from the United StateB district attorney iu California Thoy wero on the track of a coaling station ? the United States wanted to make a treaty with a girl. The girl was here ? somewhere. "Hello," said Neal. "look. There's a horse ? a riderless horse. Co on. boys ? got U. double quick." Throe or the squad caught tno horse and brought it to Neal. "A woman swaddle," said Neal. His heart was in his throat. "Look." lie drew from Mm pommel an object that had caught there ? one of a pair of woman's gloveti. "Annette's, he cried, "something has happened." "Forward, double quick,'' command ed the lieutenant. Wo'll see."' At the hotel they found Mrs. Har din nnd Joe. gavdng anxiously off to ward the miNslon. Neal caught bis mother by the arm. "Annette." he cried, "we caught hdr horse Where is she?" They told the story of her starting out "Not a mounnt to lose," exclaimed Neal. "eotne on hoys ? hurry all you can." Meantime at the mission, Hernan do/. and I lie/.? with lull confidence in Pontes ability to delay the advent of Annette -had once more presented ithemsch Old before Brother Anselmo. "We have been patient, father, said Hernandez, "and we tru?t that prayer ? and sleep have givn you wisdom and enlightenment, and satis fled you oi the Justice of our claim. "Ah. yon speak truth, son ' s?i<? Brother Anselmo. He rose .vni ,, ;t the room, returning immediately wi?h the iron bo* containing the documents in question He set it down upon th^ table." There was a hubbub outside in the courtyard. In the midst of it a clooi was thrust open, and the Hrute strode in carrying Annette In his arms? An nette, still only semiconscious ? still suffering from the' shock of that writh ing figure at the bottom of the jaguar trap back there in tho desert. Some instinct had led the Brute back to bis master. Ho laid t tie figure of Annette uyon the table with the air of otic who Ai:.s done his duty well. "Brothers," cried Brother Anselmo, seeing Annette's plight, "quick ? re storatives ? succor for thU young girl. ' Hernandoz took advantage of the confusion ? though he himself was con fused beyond all peradventure. "Lis ten," ho said to Inez, "leave her with the Brute? go at onco. I'll do the rest." Unnoticed, Inez and the Brute oboyed. Thoy left the room, hurried across the courtyard and disappeared. Hernandoz watched them go. His coolness returned. Swiftly, with one hound, he was upon Brother Anselmo I and hud seized the iron box in his iron | grasp. In an instant he was across the | room, j But Brother Anselmo had done something more than pray and sleep in his quiet existence. He was an ac tive, well trained Individual. With a loud cry he leaped across the inter vening space, and bounded upon the shoulders of Hernandez. | "Help, help, brothers," he command ed. Thore wus help aplenty. Hernandoz fought liko a madman, but the broth ers clung to him like leeches. Slowly, however, he worked his way toward the i\parost exit? and then with a mighty wrench, he threw off all his as sailants including Brother Anselmo, and darted, with a mighty leap out through the doorway. He bounded into the arms of Neal Hardin and his squad. Neal saw at a glance what had hap poned. He solzod Hernandez* wrist ? the wrist of the hand and arm that hold the iron box, and/twisted it sud denly, painfully. Hernandez dropped the box ? but Jerked away from Neal, sprang to a window and disappeared. Behi: ?d him lie heard the steady plup-plup of many footsteps ? the steady lope of marines that uats up tho long miles in less time than it takes to toll it. "Damn them." said Hernandez, "I'll beat them to it yet." Behind him the footsteps stopped. Thore was d report ? a ping. Hernan dez had reached the edge of tho green oasis. He screamed with pain. It was as though a rod hot . iron had seared him. He had been hit in the arm. "Damn you," he screamed in pain, "I'll beat you to it, yet." With almost unseeing eyes he tore across tho small green space ? and then ho stumbled, and slid, slid, slid ? into what seemed a bottomless pit. Ho Just escaped a stake ? a bloody one. And he foil ? or rather slumped ? upon something soft and yielding^ With another oath he rose to his feet and peerod about him. Then he drew back in terror. Thore lay Ponto ? his mate ? dcad.j distorted. . . . Hernandez screamed in terror ? -he was only human. This thing was hor rible A shadow startled him. He looked upward. Tho Brute was peering ! down? he was doing more ? he slowly slid down into tho pit and caught Hor- J nandez In his grasp. Then, somehow, j using his broad shoulders and his j arms and knees he worked his way back again to terra flrrna, and drew Hernandez? groaning with the pain oi his wound? up after him. Then with tho nimbleness cf a deer, the Bruto ? after slinging Hernandez upon his back ? trotted off into the safety of the} beyond. Back at the monastery. Annetto II- 1 ington opened her eyes and looked in- j to tho face of Brother Anselmo. "I am Annette Ilington," she ex- j claimed, "I am the Hatreds of the ? I.ost Isle of Cinnabar." Brother Ansolmo turned to Ensign ' Neal Hardin.' "l"K>ea she speak truth?" he querlod j She dr>os. ' said Neal, "and my giv- ! eminent will back her to the limit > She is what she savs ahe is Wo all) will vouch for that." "Ah." mused Brother Anselmo. j what a wonderful thing is prayer ? 1 what a wonderful thing is sleep?" He Hoppod. "j have prayed," he went on. alowly, puzaled. "but not yet have I solved tho mystery of tho cyoe of that big man ? -the eyes? " Hfe stopped again. For the ?yes oi Annette Ilington wtr. rlv#t#d npon him. ? TO RR CONT1 NU SD.)
