Ponto, knowing the reason for haste, turned and looked about him. He was puzzled by Hernandez' absence, but this was no time to wonder.. Ho drew a knife and started toward Annette. The Brute, grasping in his hand a sapling, leaned far out from the shore of the little islet and with one hand grasped Annette, drew her. drip ping from the quagmire and sot her on dry land. Behhid him he heard shouts.. In a frenzy of fear, he soizrd l'onto's body, slung it over his shoulder, and then, with the instinct of a brute and not a man. he leaped lightly, but sure ly. from bog to bog. and disappeared along some pathless trail Ten minutes, later Annette. in the midst of a motley rhwil of tara and natives ? and in the glare of many torches, was answering Meal's whim pered question. "No, dear," sho whispored back, "they didn't get. the map. They couldn't get if. Last week 1 gave It ? for safe keeping ? to the commander of the A Tbany."
