I believed that the only way to pre? vent it was to openly and hbldly sup port (Jov. Li lea ho : to magnify his jmiw er and to add to his strength, so that with all t he election machinery in his hands, no convention would dare place tiie poor and ignorant white man in the primaries on the same basis as the negro in the general election. The late convention went as far as it could without disrupting the party. I have no ai>ologiea to make. I did what I thought was right. In 1912 and since, there has been a systematic effort to defeat Governor Blease by destroying 1dm as a man, not a politician. Every man support ing him was written down either as a knave or an ignoramus. There was a cry about money being paid for pardons. Burns raked the state with his detectives armed with a devilish dictagraph. They dangled a $lf>,(HH) foe in front of a drunk law yer's eye*, and God knows they are greedy enough sober. What did they get? Not a word of proof to confirm false atid slanderous charges. Such a sentiment was worked up through the press and stories circula ted by word of mouth that thousands of iKiople today really look upon (Jov. Blease as the lowest, meanest man who ever trod South 'Carolina soil. What is the result? A versatile and shrewd politician; has taken advantage Of-thexe conditions to transform him self into a people's idol and working man's champion. To the toilers in the workshop and the factory it is because he is their friend, he is persecuted. You hit him, you hit them. To thou sands he is their only stake in govern ment. I know this is all rot, but they be lieve it, and that makes it true. The masses never see the man at all, they only see the ideal reflected from the longings of their own souls. The imagination of men in all ages have manufactured from common clav lmlos of glory with which to crown tb?lr saints and heroes. In this world it is not what a man Is but what peo ple think lie is. It is only God Who jdfts the wheat from the chaff. T. he other side have the legislature, the courts, bar, press and pulpit. They have education, wealth and power. They can afford to be generous. I have never believed that peace could come to South Carolina except -bp? Rising those people the only thing they want? the one thing. I fcm glad that Senator Tillman has reached the same conclusion, that peace can only come through the election not the de feat of Governor Blease. He ought to know by this time how little it mat ters who is in the Renate compared' to who fills the governor's office. He also knows how the United States senate can "tame," so to speak, the wild and wooly. I am glad that his candidate, Jno. G. Richards, has declared (on the quiet) for Gov. Blease. To bring these two tribunes of the, people together Is a worthy sacrifice which I Joyfully make. It was a precious privilege to hold the flag staff steady, until these true leaders could unite upon one wor thy to bear aloft the shining folds of that spotless banner of freedom. I gladly jdace this precious emblem of peace and fraternity in the hands of Mr. Richards. Supported by one good office and eagerly reaching for another one, he will defend it as long as there is any thing in sigh^ with all the zeal of a new convert, whose congenital defects .^oy|raj-y. Had McLaurin followed my advice and exixwed Measelsm, its ufc ter selfishness, its lack of catholicity of spirit, and statesmanship, he would have stood some chance of 'coming back' in the future, for he would hate atoned for bin betrayal of the people of. the state, but now there is no earth ly chance for him whatever Mease does. 1 believe this alliance between the two will cause Governor Mease to go down to defeat, more surely."
