race;" that "the child ut birth has, not
a few moqths, but 10,000,000 years of
unbroken life to bac?k him in his fight
with environment," and that "even in
the slums four-fifths of all the chil
dren are born normal and healthy,"
was proclaimed by I)r. Woods Hutch
inson. ;
"One excitable gentleman," he said,
"figured out that the- rate at which
insanity was increasing we would all
be mad in a century and a quarter.
"He forgot that the increase was
due largoly to the fact that more cases
of insanity aro cared for today that
formerly. And, at the worst, only from
1 to 2,/? per cent, of humanity is defec
tive raentaUy. A careful use of nega
tive eugenics, preventing tho breeding
of real defectives, can reduco that pro
portion almost to nothing.
"The great man comes up from the
masses, 40 per cent, of tho time in one '
hound from an unknown father; even
oftener from unknown grandparents.
Nearly 150 per cent, of great men were
dolicato in childhood, though they are
distinctly long-lived and robust in man
hood. The reas6n why more great
men do not come from tho really poor
is that the stress of early environment
does not let them live."

Above all, amusement should be sim
plified ?nd accepted rather than
sought after. Only vegetable and
, semi-animal foods1 should be eaten."

Temperance Drink.
An amusing story is being told of a
clergyman who was being entertained
over a -week-end by one of the well-to
do but plain men of a Lancashire town
not tar from Manchester.
As soon as tlio guost was settled by
the fireside on the Sunday evening
his host asked him: "Aro you a tee
totaller?" 1- ~
"Well, no; not exactly,' the clergy
man admitted.
The master of the house received
.the statement with obvious relief. .
"Ah'm relglit glad to hear it," he
said; "we'n had that sort stayin' with
us afore. Now, if yo'd been one o'
them teetotallers, ye'd 'a' been wantin'
sod** water and lemonade and lime
juice and ginger ale, and nobody
knows what all. But as yo ain't a tee
totaller, ye ll be like the rest o' us,
an' satisfied wi' plain water!"

Two investigators and writers in j
the Lightning Journal have given the i
result of their efforts to measure tho I
caudle power of the lightning bug.
The glow worm, which is the larvae j
of the firefly, was found to give off an
illumination equal to .0018 candle pow
er to the square centimeter. Tho
flash of the firefly is probably many
fold, perhaps 50 or 100-fold, f\s bright
? as the steady glow of the larva. It
appears, then, that the luminous ma- i
toi^al of tho glow worm, could it be
reproduced, would not only be of high
luminous efflcioncy, but would also bo
a happy means in intrinsic brightness,
far lower than tho artificial light
sources with which we now try our j
eyes, yet high enough to permit its j
use without pre-empting more wall ;
