All of the great discoveries that have been made In the interest, of agricul ture we owe to scientific men. It was the scientific man who discover ed that leguminous crops are able to take nitrogen from the air and deposit it in the soil, ami save the farmer the liiout costly of all ferti lizer ingredients; it was the scienti fic man who made It possible for Us to overcome to 'a' large degree the ravages- of hog cholera by the use of hog cholera serum; it was the scientific man who enabled us to secure a seed corn that would give a greater yield per acre, by reason of careful selection and breed' iug; it is to the entomologist and plant pathologist that wo go 'to when insects aijd plant diseases are de stroying our crops; it was scientific men who invented and manufactur ed all of the Improved implements for the preparation and cultivation of the soil and harvesting of the crop. Surely, when we realize these facts. we must respect and be willing to heed the instructions of these students of plants' and the soil. Mr. .John Morton died at his home near Shiloh church in the northern section of the county last Friday. Me was 85 years of age and one of the most highly respected citizens of Kershaw county. He served his st.'ite gallantly for three years as a soldier in the war between the sec tions. For GO years he was a con sistent member of Shiloh Methodist Church Mr. Morton. Was twice married. First to Miss Matilda Truesdale, and to this union were born seven chil dren, five of whom suryive him. They are J. J. Morton, of Bethune; J. M. Morton, of Payo, Ga.;G. F. Morton and M. T. Morton, and Miss Lizzie Horton who resided at, the home place. His second wife was a Mrs. Gaskins, who, also survives him.. .
