Corporal Kirkpatrick, of Co. 78,1 at Irtort Moultrie, lies badly wound- 1 ed as the result of being attacked by a viciou?, eight foot shark, off the post barracks, yesterday after noon. He and a number of other soldiers were enjoying the surf in front of the barracks? and were a bout armpit deep, when suddenly the corporal emitted a cry of pain and surprise, and called for help. His fellow soldiers ruBhed to him* and dragged him in to more shal low water. Meanwhile the dreaded shark's fin was observed darting a bout the churned up water,, and the voracious fish made a charge for the party helping the wounded soldier to the shore. None of them was touched, however, by the shark, as they beat upon the watter and uttered loua cries, frightening the blood thirsty monster away. It was found that Corporal Klrk-l Patrick had been badly wounded on j his left foot, two or three toes be ing severed, and his ankle laperat-l ed. He was hurried to the ppst hospital, and given surgical treat-1 xnent, twelve stittches closing up the painful wound. Today he is resting, fairly comfortable'; but with a swollen leg, and shooting pains in the Injured membeer. This savage attack of the shark has caused considerable alarm in th neighborhood of its haunts, and bathers near the barracks are k'eep ing a sharp outlook for other or the same fish, which got' away .v in safety after attcaking the BoldferS. While It is contended by some peo ple that sharks do not bite hutnan beings^, several cases harve' been re corded her* showing that ther.(&0, and even cause >death at times.
