A well dressed woman entered a pawnshop on lb# East side, near Fifty - n hit h street x eater day and asked the clerk .whether he would do her the favor of lendiug her $1 on 9100, ?a>? a New York special. Even at she spoke she drew five 120 gold piece* and handed them to tfie cl**"k. Customers In the atore almost dropped their packages In amazement. "You see." explained the woman to the customers, 'I got these gold pieces as presents at Christmas, New Year's day and on my birthday last week. 1 don't want to spend them or risk losing them by keeping them at home, and if I put them in the bank I would not get the same gold pieces back when I withdrew, my de posit. 8o I brought them here for safekeeping." To her own surprise the pawnbro ker assured her that this was a very common practice in pawnshops, and as proof he produced several email envelopes contallnlng bills and gold pieces of various denominations which had been pledged with him by other customers with the same design. On each dollar three cents interest is paid, or at the end of the year 30 cents. The pawnbroker added that In ma ny cases the money thus pledged was the gift of some dead friend of the customer. In not a single case, he declared, had the pledge been unredeemed, altho In one instance it was unredeemed for seven years by a customer who called once?v*a year to look at it and pay his Inter est. ?
