Alelvar, another passenger. The dis
patch slated that Captain Dugge was
seriously injured, and Mr. Khattuek
not so badly. Alelvar Is a Mexican,
but nothing further Is known of him.
The Priny, Oskar had a very small
passenger list, and so far as can be
learned Alelvar and Khattuek were to*
tnl strangers. With Mr. Khattuek was
a (ravelin# companion.
The cabled report ways that there
was a (IkIiI aboard after a game of
cards, Which was played in the smok
ing room. Alelvar is saui to nave be
come temporarily deranged. lie went
to his stateroom and, procuring a revol
ver, started on a hunt for Khattuek.
Some of tlie sailors saw him carrying
the revolver, and uotilled the officer of
the watch, who in turn notified Captain

The captain went after Alelvar, and
oi. finding him attempted to take the
#1111 from him. Alelvar turned It on
the captnin, shot hi in . and then passed
on in scarch of Shatiuek. They met on
the promenade deck, where several
more shots were tireil. two taking; ef

Viir. but was shot down before he could

Captain Dugge was carried to his
room, where Dr. Seidel, the shii?'s doc- j
tor. and Dr. Dolodoni, 1111 Italian physi- !
eian aboard, treated him. When tho
ship reached port he was removed to a
hospital. Chief O If leer Itollln took'
eommand of the ship and had Alelvar
put in irons, lie was kept in his state
room under guard until the ship made
Naples, when the authorities took
charge of him. Mr. Shattuck was
t rented aboard.
At the local olliee of the Hamburg
Aiuerieau l.iue it was said that Alelvar
hooked from this city, but did not give
his heme address. The man who sold
the tlciict to him said that he was a
short, rather stout dark man with a

Sedalia, Mo.- Cliai'lea K. Illiss paid
a bet wit it his life here. lie staked his
existence on a game of cards ami lost.
As a result lie committed suicide.
Illiss. who was known here as Charles
K. ltarlow, was twenty-six years old.
His home recently was iu Peru, Did.
lie was the son of a Seventh Day Ad
vent 1st preacher, and has a sister, Mrs.
Ada Mellon, In Sprlnglleld, III.
.lust before midnight Illiss called on
"Ted" Moore, a woman with whom he
had become infatuated, and she chal
lenged him to play a game of pitch.
When the woman asked, "What will
we play for?" Illiss replied, "I will
stake my life against yours."
The woman accepted the challenge
and the cards were dealt In a few
minutes Hliss* pile of chips had dis
appeared. lie put 011 his hat and with
a cheerful good-by left the woman's
apartments, lie purchased a bottle of
carbolic acid, went into a saloon with
a friend and drank a glass of beer,
after pouring the poison Into the glass,
lie died before a physician could be
summoned.

.and at a speed of about thirty miles
jan hour. The locomotives were de
jmolishcd and the major portion of each

(the exception of the sleeping cars,
none of which left the track. The
wrecked day cars were tilled with dead
and Injured and the rescue work was
accomplished with great difficulty.

: Hundreds were attracted from
Hodges Station, N^wmark't and the
| many farmhouses in the vicinity of
jthe wreck. The people thereabouts
rendered every possible assistance.
The dead and injured wore placed
on the special train and brought to
Kuoxville. Five of the injured died
while on the way to this city. Some
were taken to the Knoxvllle General
Hospital and others to their homes
or the homes of friends. -> A local
undertaker had 1">0 cots^jn readiness
at the Munson street crossing, where
the- dead and Injured were removed
; from the train.
Two day cars were crushed on the
i east hound train between the baggage
? car and the slepeors. In one coach only
I one person escaped with lits life. Tim
persons not injured, and the relief
, corps from Newmarket worked man
i fully, rescuing Injured, waiting upon
them, carrying water and placing pil
lows under their heads.
The appalling loss of life resulted
J apparently from the disregarding of
j orders given to the two trains to meet
; at a station which has for a long time
been their regular meeting point. The
I accident happened In broad daylight,

obtainable, the engine driver of the
; [westbound train had the order in a
I little frame in front of him as his
engine rushed by the station.
Among the passengers in one of the
i sleeping cars 011 the eastbonnd train
(was Mrs. J, 13. Frazier, wife of the
j [Governor of Tennessee. With lier
; .daughter, she was 011 her way to New
i;\ork City. Neither Mrs. Frazier nor
?her daughter was hurt, and both ren
' dered noble service in ministering to
j 'the Injured, even to the extent of res

Mortnt Vesuvius, a large part of t lie
population of the surrounding villages
have left their homes and arc camped

the volcano. Several earthquake
shocks were felt, and the eruption
reached an intensity far beyond that
of any other outbreak since the de
structive convulsions of 1872.
