This is especially noticeable in tho city of Camden, 8. This officer was buried in Camden and in 1825 a monument, the corner stone of wliich wan laid by Lafayette, was erected over bis remains. One of the halls of the city bears the name of the French general. During the Civil war this city wan ravaged by Sherman's aruiy. It has recovered very slowly from tho ef fects of that war and even now is in that apathetic conditiou which is no ticeable in those southern plaors which have not yet felt tho influence? of northern energy. Its attitude to day is more distinctively Southern than any place [ have yet visited, there are few places in tli* eouth however where tho outlook with prop er energy and capital is any brighter than in this old city by tho VVateree Its situation is in tho ^reat cotton belt of South Carolina and the build ing of now cotton mills within its borders, in addition to tho two new railroads now nearly completed, one ^Of which is the extension of h groat ??
