OATHS FOR TEAClttfcRS' ? In a number of states laws have been passed,, ot have been proposed, requiring teacher's in the public schools and colleges to take the oatftl of allegiance, as must be done by of ficials in various branches of the gov* ernment. The dread about the spread of Cocn&nuoistic doctrines, in which many educators of note, as well as teach ers of lesser- rank, are sdJd to have taken part. That organized grtoups of teachers have protested against taking the oath is petUaps one of the most convincing arguments for re quiring it. It is diffctxlt to see liow any true American could object to taking the oath, which officials fro en the President down must take before entering upon the dtities of their re spective offices. The oath is as fol-i lows: 1 "I * * * do solemnly swear (or' affirm) that I will support and de-j fend the Constitution of the Unitea States against all eoemSes, foreign and dom&itic; that I will be&fr true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this OlbMgatlon freely, with out any mental reservation otr purpose of evasion; and that I will w'ell and faithfully discharge tile duties of the ?ffice on whicK l am about to enter. So help me Cod." It seems to us that anyone who Would refuse to make tfiftS simple de claration of loyalty to Ainv?fri6an prin cipals is unfit to be entrusted with the training of future Ametf Can cit izens. THE LONG StlFFEWKG MOTORIST The motorist is a helpless victim of taxation because there is no pftUitfeal substitute for gaaiolMe. For almost any other coaifrnottity thd consumer cAh use a substitute. But when it c6mes to gasoline, it's pay the or stop driving. The states started taxing gasoline "ampderately" but, as with all special taxes, the gas tax soon became exorb" Itant. Then the federal government decided to take its pound Of flesh from tifoe motorist. Motorists have it in their poW^r to demand a reduction of efcoftxit&nt gafl taxes, including the actdal repeal of the federal gas tax. They also have the right to demand that gasoline taxes be not used for other than road purposes. WJjen taxes run from 26 to 60 $er cent of the retail price of any article, as the gasoline tax does, it is trigh time to correct the aJbtisfe. uoutcy abwe TEST ITS POWER AND ECONOMY, SPEED AND SAFETY, KNEE-ACTION COMFORT AND STABILITY. Car Buyers Prefer Knee Action Conclusive proof of the motoring public's demand for knee-action, de monstrating that buyers not only want it but are willing to pay the small extra charge for it, is presented in the Chevrolet Motor Company's announcement that only three per cent of the purdfoasers of the Mast er de luxe mjodels, which may be had either with knees or the conventional front axle, order the conventional type suspension. William E. Holler, Vice President and General Sales Manager, who an nounced the comparative figures, de clares that the proof of the knee act ion acceptance is all the more positive because knee-action requires an out lay of $20 additional. "When we announced last January, said Mr. Holler, "tfhfat knee action would be optional equipment at a small extra charge, I underestimated the hold that the improved suspen sion had already taken on the mot oring public. I gave out a statement estimating that 90 per cent of the purchasers of the de luxe models would order knee action. Instead it waa97 peT cent. This percentage is [based on figurea| for sales beginning in March. Be fore that we were not in heavy pro duction on conventional axle Master models. In Mardh, 97.2 of our orders wore for knee action cars; in April, 90.3 per cent; in May, 98.7; and in June, 97.5 per cent. Kneo action got off to a great start in 1934, its first year. More than half of all cars registered in the Uni ted States last year had some form of knee action. Until this year, how ever, we could not tell whether people were buying cars with knee action becauso they pref erred thetn to the conventional axles, #ri(hce no other mako of oar gave buyers their choice of either form of suspension. TIMs year, Chevrolet, by (making knee action optional, has given the public its chance to register its preference, ard knoo action has won overwhelm ingly.
