I* can't think of anything \yorso than playing the part of a Swedish- housemaid. And that Is the first part 1 ever had In mov ing pictures. . I can't tell about the hardships I endured as an extra because I never played as one. Sometimes I think that Is an awful drawback to my career, not being able to give one of those success yarns on how 1 labored through weary years as an extra be fore getting my first part. But any how, I can tell of hardships 1 went through In struggling about before the camera In skirts before I graduated from the housemaid 'Tole, and I don't know but that has an extro's tribula tions outclassed any way you take It. It didn't take me long to realize that I wanted to get Into the show business. I decided that when I Baw my first circus. Consequently I left home and Joined the Ulngllng Brothers' circus when 1 was sixteen years old. You Bee, I got Into moving pictures through a process of elimination. I tried out other branches of the show business before I found the one I wanted to stick with. The novelty of being guardian to a herd of circus elephants at a salary Wallace Beery. of $3 a week wore off, but I stuck with the job for two years. Then I did"*- little serious thinking. No, that Is not one of my comedy gags. 1 really do think seriously now and then. I remember how entranced all of the people In my home county In Missouri had been by my voice In hog calling contest3. There must have been some cause for that, I reasoned. So I went to New York to try out my voice on a new audience. There I was told I had a good singing voice and was given a plnce In Henry Sav age's musical comedy organization. I stuck1 to this phnse of the 'show busi ness for several irears and became Savage'^ star comedian. Then came my introduction into the movies. I wns playing with a musical company In Chhcago when Henry Mc Uae .Webster, director genernl of tho Kssanay Film compnny, saw mc. I don't know what be thought and I am perfectly willing not to know. It might be vanity. Anyway, he cornered me after the show nnd by the time lie got through j talking I was a moving picture player. 1 started to say actor, but that i wouldn't be correct. For what did i Webster do but deck me out In skirts I and make a housemaid out of me. I | hnven't liked them since ? skirts. I mean. - I Still, wearing skirts nruJ u long blond j wig had Its compensations. For one j thing, I could live In one place and I ' could have my evening free. 1 played most every sort of comedy role, with lCssanay and then came a real hreak for me. I was sent to the West coast. There I Joined the Key stone organization nnd played for a year In Sennett comedies. Again I missed the extra player grind hnt I was given most every sort of part. You might say that by this time I had "broken Into" the movies but It was not until after 1 had returned from a trip to Japan, where I tpok a company to make a series of pic tures, that 1 feel L actually did that. I was given the dramatic role of the villain In Marshall Nellan's "Unpar donable Sin," nnd the critics and pub lic were kind enough to say that I made a very good ba?l man. It seemed for a while then that I [ was doomed to be a tlllaln for the rest of my days. I played nil sorts of heavy parts and had Just about de elded that I couldn't be anything but a rogue on the screen rto matter how bad I wanted to be good. Then a break of luck came out of n clenr sky. and with Hay Ilatton, I enjoyed playing In n long series of comedy pictures. Among them an air picture which has made of me a real aviation enthusiast. Two of my latest parts were In "The Champ,*' and "Grand IloteV and I am grateful to the public and critics for their approval of my iwtork In these plays.
