Chart showing steady, increase of taxes paid per spindle by South Carolina cotton mills Taxes Increased 40 Per ?t. for South Carolina' Cotton Mills The above ohart shows the steady upward trend of the taxes paid oer spindle by South Carolina cotton mills during the past nine years. Each year shows a definite increase except the last one. The slight decrease of ll>2(.)-o0 :> one brought about, not by a reduction of assessments, but rath?r by poor conditions that made it impossible for many mills to pay income ;axes. This increase of taxes paid per spindle of -10 per cent brings to light the fact that the increase in South Carloina has been greater than in any other textile state. While taxes in other .extile states have actually In man/ 1 asps shown decided decreases, the burden in South Carolina has steadily prown heavier. The mills in South Carolina pay a higher tax per spindle uhan in any other state in the United States. If this tax load in South Carolina is confined to ihe cotton mills, then un ci uost ion ably the state owes it to its principal industry vhat it be relieved, for the sake of competition with other textile states7 for the sake of the devel opment of the industry and the building of new textile plants. If this con dition is more or less characteristic of the state at large, then we as South Carolinians owe it to ourselves to further emphasize governmental economy, and institute tax reforms that will reduce the burden. / Such a record hampers the growth of the entire utate.
