The- announcement is made that C. E. Jones, chairman of the South Gar- , olina highway commission, will short- ' ly resign the position which lie has held wth marked ability. This . wlti I not be pleasant news to the advocates' of good roads .in South Carolina. The reasons assigned for this actioft on the ^art of Mr. Jones is that he wants to look after his own personal affairs. It Is also intimated that he may be come a candidate for office in order to defend the road construction work of the state. Our opinion is that Mr. y Jones has made a useful man as chjiirtnan of this important commiss - ^C?n and j?e regret that he is ftoing to resign jjlii post. I IB. ? SOLICITOR THREATENED Solicitor Leon W. Harris, who is iv handling the case against the Oconee Cpunty. lynchers, has received an an <<ohfmous letter threatening him ? for ?! wliat? If he does his duty. Listen ^ to the 'reply of this fearless officer: "I will heed no warning or be swayed by fthy threats of intimidation that runs contrary to my duty." Mobs are not only murderers but are cow t-rards. ; Whfert they committed this out . rage^ against the law of South Caro l^a b'y'takihg the hegro from the jail and lynching* him/they wore masks, a 'liiark of cowardice, and writing an of ficer a threatening letter, making ^sipjte" that he would not know from {^Whom i t came, that was another mark ~ of cowardice. A mob in Sherman, Texas, Friday l took vengeance upon a jagg- negro, 41, who had confessed to >v assaulting a white woman, and of " course there was no way of the negro I ' escaping the death sentence and being ? put to' death by law. But this craay mob stormed the court house late in ; :>' the night, and. used every means they Could devise to get the negro out of ?the vault into .which he was placed *.for eafe keeping. PARKER FAILED OF CONFIRM- , IIP ation ?PPl " ? " i Judge John J. Parker, of North Carolina, wh<r Was nominated as an MiKxsiate Judge on the supreme cour* t>ench, because of politics, failed of confirmation by ? close margin. He missed, confirmation by two votes. Some of his decisions were attacked, Mid it was' also charged that he said something to the effect that the ne groes had better leave politics alon% And many stich charges were brought to bear in a fight against confirma< tlon jnotwithstanding that he was cor dially endorsed by a considerable humlber of democartic senators. A number of bar associations also en dorsed him. He is a Republican and there seemed to be nothing against his pesronal character nor his ability, so it was purely a political move that defeated him. President Hoover has since named Owen J. Roberts, of Philadelphia, for the place. He will probably be confirmed. North Caro lina in the last presidential campaign, gave the Republicans a mapority, but this latest move will not tend to make the old north state solid for the re publican party. RAMBLING THOUGHT By H. C. H. I I | Most of the trouble that we have "ill this life, is due to our own cussed ness. | Forgiveness of sins is not always followed by remission of punishment for those sins. You must pay the price. j' Mr. Roach Stewart may be a candi date for governor. The job would just about pay the debt the people owe him for saving the state for democracy in the last campaign. j<lThe laborer is worthy of his hire", (even in politics; and politicians do not labor for love. One of the staunch guardians of the peoples liberties in the last campaign was pulling down $1500 per week for said guardianship. Most anyone could be loyal for that price. Silver ton gues come high. | As between the men who finance a candidate, and the people who furnish the votes, which piet service after the election - I The men who put up the coin de mand soemthing in return, and get it. ? Yes, they are still convicting Tam many leaders, lawyers, judges, etc., ir. New York and Brooklyn, for graft and corruption. Started in the last campaign and been at it ever since: and "Al" said that Tammany was all right. Sucker bait. Every time the liquor crowd appeals to the U. S. Supreme Court, they lose out. Yet, they still claim that the 18th Amendment is unconstitutional. Did anyone ever hear of a law-abid ing liquor dealer ? In the good old days when a he man could slip in the back door of a saloon and get a free lunch with his drink, politicians could buy a lot of votes for a single drink of liquor. In those fjolden days a hahf pint of li quor cost a quarter. No wonder the politicians sigh for the old days. Once upon a time there was an hon est young lawyer in St. Louis, Mo. The political machine in power need^ ed such a man to add respectability to their ticket in the next election. They offered the job of district attorney to the young lawyer*; but made the mis take of not tieing him up with pledges, He accepted the opportun ity and was elected. Then the un grateful wretch turned on the gang and sent nearly every Alderman in St. Louis to the penitentiary for grafting. , He then ran for governor, and was elected. He ran the race f^m/bler out of the state, and did other unethical political tricks. But when he ran for the U. S. Senate, he was defeated on the grounds that an honest man had no business in the U. S. Senate. I an ordinance To Prohibit the Placing of Advertls ! Ing Matter on the Streets or Pub j lie Places of the City of Camden or in or Upon Automobiles. ?
