LIBERTY HILL Mr. Editor? Wo were indeed greatly shocked and pained to hear of the heartrending and almost unthink able calamity which has befallen the Cleveland section. We hear of storms, fires, ship wrecks and other disasters, but a dis tance in other states? people we do not know, and therefore powerless to attract and hold our sympathy as in this awful case,, right at home! Among people we know ? many of i hem ? and have associated with for >ears. At is just hard to grip the i oal situation and realize that in one short hour a ^rim disaster has des poiled one of tip best sections of our county and snuffed out the lives of scores of our b??t and most worthy '".tUsens and friends. Truly it is sad ir^xpressibly sad; and our heartfelt Vj.npathy goes out to the stricken community and survivors in their sore distress. The people of this entire uommunity feel a deep concern for the stricken section and greatly de plore the unexpected, fearful visita tion. Misses Lizzie and Lai Richards, who have been teaching at Marion and Louisville respectively, have ar rived at their home here for the sun. mer vacation. Mrs. J. H. Quattlebaum and baby, of Saluda county, are spending a few days at the home of her father, your scribe. Mr. and Mrs. J. 13. Cureton, of Camden, were visitors to relatives on "the Hill" Sunday. Miss Frances Clements, who has been teaching in Saluda county, has returned home. Mr. W. D. McDowall, of near Cam den, spent Sunday with relutives hero. Mrs. I. B. Small nnd bahy, of Lan caster county, are visiting relatives at this place. Mr. W. K. Thompson, of Rock Hill, was a visitor here on Sunday. Mrs. Thompson and W. K. Jr., have been here for some days. A number of our people have been attending the Chautauqua meetings in Lancaster the past week. Mr. R. C. Jones, Jr., and n couplo of young ladies made the trip to Bishopville on Sunday. C. . -Mothero Day at Pisgah Church: The exercises at Pisgah church last Sunday were very interesting. ~ It was Mothers day, and a large congregation, enough to fill the church twice?came out to pay tri bute to the best of our ciitzens? Mother. The exercises commenced by several recitations by girls * and young ladies of fine productions ap propriate to the occasion,these over, Hon. Claude Chewning, a member of the House from the county? made an intereqting address. He spoke on Mother, what she . has done and is doing for the betterment of the world and appealed to all to pay horn age to our Mothers. Mr. Chewning has this year taken much interest in , th6 religious work at Pisgah church, Und his efforts are justly appreciat ed. Judge Mendel L. Smith spoke next in his always eloquent and im pressive manner. He was warmly received by his many friends, &nd a member of the church, on the part of the church, extended to him a warm welcome to which he fittingly resportedd? relating' some incidents of his boyhood days, he was born and raised near her9 at Spring Hill until his fatehr moved to Camden about 1873. In his address, ,he took a wide range of thought. Showed what the World's War had done and the re sults of it, in many things. Spoke of so many crimes going on, murders and things affecting our people, and appoaled to all to live better and more God fearing lives, and of Mother, our work, what she has done, and is doing for tie world. He paid an eloquent tribute to her. It would make this piece too long to give an extended synopsis of this most elo quent address which was listened to with profound attention by an over crowed houso who came far and near to hear him. Many of Cam den's best people came down. Among them were Judge Smiths mother, ' \vife and daughter. Mr. W. G.' Wil son wife, and others, and we were glad to have them all and hope they will come again. Six teen sessions were held during tho three days and special provision was made for each department of Sun day School work. A. Palm er was re-elected General Superin I den*. Died in Columbia. Mrs. Maggie Bcck, a native of this county died in Columbia Thursday after an illness of a year or more. The remains were brought to Camden for interment. She is survived by one son, Albert Isbell, and a number J of other relatives. Death Oi Mr. Sprndley. | Mr. W. J. Spradley, a life long re I sident ot' this county and a confeder I ate veteran died at the Confederate i Home in Columbia Friday. His body | brought home for interment and i were laid to rest at Mt. Zion church [ yard a few miles east of Camden, in I tho neighborhood where he spent the j greater part of his long life. Mr. j Spradley was 81 years of age, and was held in high esteem by all who i knew him. He was always a friend | of ours and it was ever a pleasure j for us to meet him and have a chat 1 with him.
