The county superintendents of edu cation held a meeting at Winthrop College last week. We attended this meeting and enjoyed meeting with the superintendents of other counties, and diBCUBsing with them the manv pro blems that they have to deal with. Among the subjects discussed were buildings and grounds; problems of finance; teachers; Industrial work; sohool term; county activities. The attention of Governor Manning was called to the illegal sales of whiskey in this community some weeks ago, and recently when passing through Camden ho took the matter up with the local authorities. The re sult was that the Governor appointed Mr. G. Pi. Bateman a special constable and last~woek more than a score of arrests wero made, some whites and tho majority negroes. College Offers Opportunity to South Carolina Women. The short course for Club Women offered by Winthrop Collect1 June 20th to July 8th \> rich and full. Hornaby, one of the trus tees in this district, presided Ad in teresting program was rendered, quite a number of the pupils taking part. After the programme bad been con cluded business matters were called up. Several committees were not ready to report, so they were contin ued until next meeting. Mr C. W. Blrchmore, county sup eriutendent of education, was intro duced and made an addeeas on school improvements. The attendance upon this meeting was very (food indeed. We are glad that this association proposes to keep up its meetings once a month through out the summer. A great deal of good can be done in this way. If all of the schools having libraries, and the most of thena have, would arrange to open their libraries once or twice a month, they would afford much pleasure and profit. PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS Lieut Harold liirchmoro, foreman in The Messenger oftice, has gone to Camp Styx In respons to the summons of the national government. He has been our main helper for quite & while and his leaving is a big loss to us. He is a nephew of the editor of The Messenger. We have no doubt of the mettle he will display whether in camp, on the border or in battle. He along with his other brave comrades wlil emphasize the courage of every true soldier. Wi hope, oowever, that the strife will soon end and that he with all the rest can return home. Messrs. W. R. Gregory and H. E. Williams, of near Hanging Hock, were In Camnen Friday afternoon. T^ey are interested in making some improvements to their Bchool building. Another room will be added and the school will be made a two-teacher ru ral graded school. Mr. J. H. McLeod, a member of the firm composing the People's Supply Co., after spending a brief vacation away from home has returned. Mr. J. C. Nicholson is spending a few weeks la Florida. He Is at Hot Springs with the hope of being cured of his rheumatism. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Hoffer are ?pending several weeks with relatives of the former in Pennsylvania. Messrs. L. A & E. N. McDowell went to Rook Hill last Wednesday morning to bring back with them an "Anderson" touring car for which they have secured the agency in Cam den.
