If war is averted with Mexico, it will be by the merest chance. The indications all point to a conflict. The shooting down of American soldiers last week after leading them i lto a trap, has rendered conditions all the more acute. Another note ^bas been sent to the de facto head K>fthe Mexican government, asking Pfor specific statement as to the atti tude of Mexico towards the United States government, and it is hard ly likely in view of past events, that the reply will be considered satisfactory to our government, and if it is not, the chances are that war will be declared, War with Mexico or any other nation is to be deplored, but if it must come there is only one way to act, and that is to defend our country with all the force we can. It can be oniy a short while before I Mexico would be whipped, unless I other nations come into the conflict Once the battle is on there can be no telling the outcome. It may take few months only to bring the war to a close, or it may take years. We can only hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Thousands of lives and millions of dollars may be lost, but the American soldiers will meet the issue unflinchingly. A PROPER ACT. The papers reported Friday that congress had added an amendment to the Hay war measure providing a fund of one million dollars to care for" the families ot the National Guard who had left their positions to respond to a call of duty, and .whose families would need assist ance until their return home. They are to be paid a sum not exceeding fifty dollars a month. This act of Congress will receive the hearty approval of all right thinking peo |pl$ everywhere. In many instances ?|t means a great sacrifice for men take up arms and leave their lomes. Some of the men who ive gone from this community fwould be hit hard if some provis ion was not made to-care for their [families while they are awav. Their Le*t~u.'joTY1 'Is unquuestioned. And it is a duty of those at home to see to it that their families do not suff er. Our resources should gladly .be placed at their disposal. Al cady a movement had been started ?y some of the ladies?
