SECRET ORGANIZATIONS. fThe farmers in various parts ot the State are forming organizations, called Farmers Seaet A>ssciations, ?no we have noticed some criticisms because it is called a secret a?soci ?It ton. There is no use to get ex-| cited about thi;? at all. Who are these farmers? Are they not gooo {?r.z?ns-of our county and State? ? They are not designing men, wh< ?re secretly organizing 'o injure any legitimate business. We would be unwilling to believe tha they would do any such thing. The grange, which flourished for a num ber of years, was a secret organi zation. It was free from the domi nation of designing ^politicians, and t ;. this reason had quite a long 'ite and accomplished great good. As a n.ember of this organization , we knew something of the inside working ot the grange Then tht Farmers' Alliance, a distinct organ ization, was formed, and it, too, was designed to be of help to the farm ers, and in many instances did a good work, but its doors were tcx wiJj open and all classes of citizens could be admitted, and with tuis limitation, or lack of limitation, the whipper-snapper puliticians got hold of it and used it for all it was worth, and it was wrtcked. The f .rmers unio.i wa* the next organ iz tion, tind it '.\as non political and did a good work. We are not in a position to Know what the objects of ihe Farmers' Seaet Association , has in view, but we are perfectl) willing to trust an organized body of larmers to get together for their mu ual benefit. If they can do any thing towards protecting themselves in marketing their cotton and other crops, we want them to do it. The complaint has always been made that the farmers would no p :ck together, but the tearful wai In the e*st has c'oie much towards miking ut feel like sticking together and it will do this especially for th? tilling masses of people. We want to see the farmer prosperous and i h ippy, and the proper protection I given him tn th* handling of .the products from his farm. The farm er feeds us all, and we owe much to him. If their set ret association will work out for them a better and ? brighter day, we wish them God speed. ? No one would be more ready to condemn an organization than we would be, whether it was composed of faimers, bankers, merchants, mechanics or any othei class of citizens, if its aim was to be de structive of the welfare ot any other legitimate business or occupation, but the farmers are not built that way, and can be trusted. They will have "ti e well done" of all good citizens in the pursuit of legiti mate e.ids. If the word "secret" was eliminated, and certain limita tions were fixed as to its member ship, it wr.'uld have exactly the same effect. We say let them or ganise their secret associations if they wish to, and obtain better con ditions if they can. WlttilSTOh, M.
