THE IUHD COMFEKENCK The road conference held last Fri day, we believe, will result in good*, as discouraging as the meeting \va in some respects. In the first plao there was not as large a turnout a there should have been. The meet ing opened with only torts' preseiU. but this number was more thai doubled in a short while. At leas a thousand people should have beei present, su important is the ques tion of good roads. Senator Hay and Representative: Smith and Richards were presen at the conference. Supervisor Du rant, of Lee'County, was an inter ested listener. He has built 5! miles of good roads in Lee Count) and Is wavWwf"^H\?pnovefnent witl a view of getting all out of it he pos sibly can. We do not know what to say ol our count)- superv isor and his .tsso dates on the board. They were, however, conspicuous f < >r their ab sence. We hope the absence ol these gentleman from this confer- i ence does not mean that they ari indifferent to this question which is of such great importance to tin people of this county. The fear ful condition of out highways pre sent a problem that cannot be work ed out in a day or a week, and oui officers whose duty it is to look al ter these roads, should be glad o any assistance that can be givei them. The idea of the road confer ences is to discus's methods, and t< arrive at some definite plan, and ii is highly desirable that the commis sioners take an active part in thesi conferences. Their absence block? the way kto a ^great extent, ark what we want is as smooth ""sailinj. as possible. Let everybody haw his opinion, and be ready to express' it at the right time, but by all means let us one and all, the supervisoi and the commissioners included pull together for good roads. Blackwell.] The great essential to succes> m an\ line of work is thorough preparation. I' he nun who enters any calling in lite has :io assurance that he is going to succeed un less he has first mastered the laws and principles of his vocation. I refer to laws md principles in a general way because there are certain well marked and definite laws in every department of life lo which i ill phenomena of life conform. And if these were studied and mastered thev woulc slace the student in >uch an independent >osition that he would teel that without Joubt he !s standing on tirm ground ano is perfectly familiar with the conditions ol ind requisites to success in his particula: calling. But on the other hand, if a man attempts any pursuit whatever without suitable preparation, it is a mere accident if he succeeds. Why should he expect success? Pilings do not .just happen in .his world. There is always a cause be fore there can be an eftect. If a man fails, there is without doubt a reason for it. If lie succeeds, we can safely infer that he has studied carefully all the con ditions of his line of w ork and knows just vhat will produce certain effects. And furthermore, success is in propor. .ion to the thoro" ghiuss of the preparation successes or failures are not always com ilete. But rather by far the most of met. ?ucceed only to a certain extent. The\ manage to make enough out of their occu pation to live upon and can't for the lift >f them see how their next door neighbo s getting rich at the same profession. I wish now to call at ention to the fact that it is especiallv ap ?licable to the Sunday School teacher. The man or the woman who goes before .. .lass composed of either young or oL without having first studied and laborer na prayerful, earnest manner is even mort ?ure to fail in accomplishing the purpose .or which he or she should be >tri\ in>_ .han he who attempts to keep books with >ut a business education. First, the courses of study arranged foi >ur schools are graded and systematic They are prepared by competent experienc ed men. Men who have to a large extent Je voted their lives to this or similar work. I'hey know just what will bring about tin .??est results. Each lesson is intended t< ;each a definite truth. Please note thir statement, for the teacher who fails t< realize this fact most certainly has a wronj conception of the real purpose of Sunda\ School teaching. 1 repeat, each lesson i* intended to teach a definite, distinct truth, vVhile several lessons may be drawn, ye .here should be uppermost in the mind o: .he teacher one great truth that is made t< stand out so as to be given prominence ibove all others. And then, as I havt animated, there is a continuity betweei ill the lessons combined. While each les son has within itself a distinct end, never heless it is also a preparation or stepping stone to what follows. Or I might bettei ixpress it, as a single link having its own special mission in one great chain with it. still greater and more far reaching purpose. ^Jow if this be true, that each Isssor. should teach a definite truth, and that all :he lessons taken together should accom plish a still greater end, is the importance >f preparing each lesson carefully not ?dearly evident? How can a man impress mother with a troth that he is not thor >ughlv familiar with himself? He ma\ ;av, ' I will talk extempore and thus im press several lessons upon the members ot ny class." But there is no system in hat and you know that without system ind definiteness of purpose the best re ?ults cannot follow. And then continuity s destroyed and the purpose of the course maccomplished. it is indeed a sight greatly t<> be deplored o see a so-called teacher take his stand >n Sunday morning in front of a class oi iright, eager boys and girls without hav ing first spent more than one hour in >rayerful, toilsome yet willing preparation. ; lis method of teaching is like this: he nerely asks in a dry, uninteresting way lie questions laid down in the quarterly vith here and there a comment which is .?vident does not come from the heart. And hen at the close of the recitation, which las been very short, he may, in the same uirposeless manner attempt to make a ew applications, as he would say, of the nany important truths found in the lesson. The result is what we would expect from ?ucli haphazard teaching: a bored, and I .link I might say, even disappointed class vhich has received almost no benefit whatsoever. On the other hand how different the pic are and how still more different the re ult, of the recitation taught by tiie teach ?r who has caught the purpose of Sunday ichool teaching and who understands lie use of the courses arranged for the eliools. He has spent several hours in heerful, hopeful preparation; has clearly ,1 mind the main truth to be impressed; is 'right and interesting during the recita ion or lecture as the case may be; and .hen the class is dismissed, in nearly ?verv case, each carries away something hat has both brought him closer to Christ i nd will be helpful to him in resisting sin luring the coming week. This is whaj nevitably follows thorough preparation. Secondly, the principle of proportionate esults according to the amount of labor expended in preparation is equally evi dent. And it is not only true in accord nice with the general law that applies to ill labor, but it is peculiarly true in the asa of the work of the Sunday School teacher. But why? Because it is (jod's work. You know he has committed His cause to His people and He helps us to succeed according as we are earnest, dili gent, and faithful in performing our duty, lie never helps man in any undertaking until he first does something himself. And as man labors and shows a desire to advance the Lord's cause, to such an extent does (iod grant to him success. And we really expect too much of ( iod if we think that He ought to give us abun dant harvest in bringing the little ones to Him through the Sunday School when we fail to do the best we can ourselves. Now we have so far directed our thoughts to the one idea, that thorough preparation is important because it is essen tial to success in Sunday School teaching. I.et us now look at the same subject from a little different point of view. Can we not say with even greater grounds that thorough, earnest work on the part of the Sunday School teacher is higlily impor tant because he is engaged in the grand | est work ever given to man? I make this statement I think advisedly, for saving men is the highest calling in this life, .iVid what better opportunity could there be for this work than in the Sunday School? When I stand before a class of girls and boys and'realjze the possibilities before me were I able to take advantage of them, I am almost stupefied with awe. And then if I am in the right frame of mind my heart goes out to them with such a long ing that I feel as though I would like to take them under my arms and carry then., almost spotless as they now are, through this world of temptation and wickedness. This, however, we cannot do. But if we have our souls burdened with their salva tion and will pray earnestly, and this is by far the most necessary preparation, for them and also prepare well each les son, we can not only touch and better their tender hearts, but if we labor earn estly, we can bring them to the foot of the cross and there place them 'under the leadership of Christ, to be led by him safely through this preparatory slate of existence ana finally to be delivered into the arms of the Father, tliere to enjoy his blessings evermore. 1 say it is important to prepare well to teach a Sunday School class because there we have opportunities that can't be found eisew here.
