PROFITS FROM DAIRY FARMING Clerason College, March 7,?What are the profits to be expected from dairying? This question now being asked by many South Carolina fanners is answered below by the dairy division of the college. 1. A gallon of average milk weighs 8.6 pounds. The milk from the average cow in South Carolina which carries some Jersey or Guernsey blood should test 4.5 penrer butter fat; therefore one gallon of 8.6 pounds of milk testing 4.5 percent butter fat will contain .387 of a pound of butter fe.t. The present price of butter fat is 37 cents per pound. Then .387 of a pound of butter fat at 37 cents is worth 14.3 cents. ^ TVin r\ room ehinno^ trt Q PrPflTTl ery tor fcutter making should test 30 to 37 percent butter fat. It will take 6.5 gallons of 4.5 percent butter fat milk to make one gaMlon of 30 percent butter fat cream; therefore from every 6.5 gallons of milk produced when separated the farm will have one gallon of 30 percent cream and 5.5 gallons of sk|oa milk This milk is skimmed by rugining it through a creaimi separator immediately after milking. The sltim milk Is worth as much per hundred pounds ras corn is worth per bushel for fr Ings hogs. It is worth twice this much to feed good calves or poultry. 3. The value of the calf from good grade cows sired by a registered dairy bull of good branding may be estimated at $10 when dropped. The bull calves should ba sold for veal when about six weetfs old, at which time they will brfcig $15 to $20 each. The heifer calres from the best cows should be raised from the best cows should be liaised for future mUtoers. Good two-year-old grade heifer* when freeh are worth 460 to $100. 4. The dairy cow will void afcout 10 tons of manure per yeter. At the prices of fertilizers this manure if worth $24.36. The value of tthe manure saved will depend on the management of the cows and how the :mannre is stored and distributed. 5. The dairy herd wil3 increase ir 'vaiue due to good feed and care. '6. The feeds grown on the farrr rare marketed through the cows, all the fertility being kept on the farm. Also the cows return a cash income for labor the whole year. One Case Lost. A taxpayer, whose Income arose from his vocation as a lawyer, made a trip to Canada In line with h5s profession, and had gotten through with tthe case?and hulf another one (which .Mr. Volstead would not hove approved). His wife, however, w?s nervous over Its presence in the house. Btoteg a conscientious person, she coolld only conclude that he was a lawbreaker and her mind was uneasy. In propoecon as the case dwindled, her hopes iwse. Her worst fours were continued when one day the bell rang and the maid announced that a revenue agent was at the door.
