\ . mm CHRONICLE JOE LDTOSAT, Editor Foreign Advertising Representative THE AMERICAN PRESS ASSOCIATION Attention is called to tlie article in this issue showing that the mild win ter has allowed the boll weevil to increase in number five times over Dre vious winters since 1913. We want | to urge farmers to take this into consideration when they plant their 1922 cotton crop. Wte trust it will not be necessary for Chesterfield county to suffer the hardships experienced by the lower part of the State before we learn our lesson. Plan to meet the big infestation even if it don't come. It will be safer. o The Charlotte Observer carries the following news item in a recent issue: Salisbury, Nov. 6.?First Methodist church has taken a forward step by the introduction of vocal lessons for all the children of the church free o1 cost to the children. For sometime this plan has been und-.r consideration by officials of the church, and it is made possible now by the acceptance of the position of director by J. Francis Griffith, a meimiber of th' church, who has recently taken special course in class instruction in vocal music. Last year Mr. Griffi' was director of music in the University of Alabama. Wouldn't this be an excellent work for the ladies organizations in our churches? The question of getting good singers has always been a weighty problem. The ladies could "put this across" by employing a regular fceacher to serve all denominations in town, by teaching classes at the different churches on different days. The resignation of Senator Christen, sen of Beaufort was,' in our opinion, the move of a politician rather than a statesman. While he may not have "fish to fry" hicn/self, he knew that there were men in the Senate who did have and could not afford to have their chances of votes jepordized. Sr he chose this dramatic wasvi of accusing the Senate of surrendering to business to the detriment of the farm, ing interests. As a matter of fac' the farmer is no more burdened with taxes in S. C. than the business man. as since the inauguration of the S. C Tax Commission the fartmier is about the only class whose taxes have not been raised unmercifully. There is a good part of the business man's so called "intangible" property now on the tax books and none of the farmer's. Business has been a big sufferer in past two years of recon?tructior and we believe the Senate was perfectly right in hesitating about shifting any of the tax burden from th<farmer to the business man at this time. Senator Cbristensen is pulling tne ?ame old wool hat stuff at a tirm when it Is unfortunate. AUDITOR'S NOTICE The Auditor's Office will be open for the assessment of all classes of property, both real and personal, poll, road and dog tax, from January 1st to February 20th, 1922. All ableboctied men between the ages of 21 and 60 are required to re. turn poll tax and those between the ages of 21 and 55 years are required to return road tax. The law requires a penalty of 50 per cent on all property not returned for taxation on or before the 20th day of Februray, 1922. T. W.
