f CHERAW CHRONICLE r JOE LINDSAY, Editor THE J EDGE'S CHARGE W'e hoard onlv a part of Judge Peurifoy's two hour charges to the Grand Jury on Monday but if the Jury only adhered to that part, Chesterfield County would be a cleaner, better county in another year. He impressed on the grand jury that too often the failure of juries tn do their duty, made men bolder in committing crimes and disregarding the law. He said that the present so called crime wave was largely blamed to illiteracy and that while illiteracy, was in a measure responsible, the real reason was that intelligent Grand Juries failed to do their duty in presenting ali Classes of men who commit crimes. He told the Grand Jury that it was their duty to diligently search for violations of the law during the period of their service and he read them the law pointing out that it was their duty to present officers of the count} who failed to prosecute violators of the law. If Judge Peurifoy's charge would be seriously taken by the Grand Jury, as it should be, the men who compose the grand jury would diligently search for violations of the law in their respective communities and present all classes of violators, and we would make more headway toward breaking the crime wave in the next six months than the officers, unaided, could do in a year. We believe we correctly interpratc the sentiment of this county when we say we want strict enforcement of the law and we appeal to the grand jury to diligently search for violators and present them for trial regardless of who they .are or what offence they have committed.
