A few weeks ago there was a riot In the city of Cleveland, O., in which Beveral were killed and scores sent to the hospital. It came as the result of an anarchistic parade in which the marchers insisted on flaunting the red flag. But it is not the riot itself to which we want to call the attention of the citizens of Cheraw and community. It is the fact that out of the 116 arrested for rioting only eight were born in the United States. And of those etght the parents of seven of thorn were born in some foreign land. And there you have a good average of the disturbers in this country. They are not Americans. They aie foreigners who have come here, and who have been afforded every opportunity enjoyed by natives. They are not satisfied with our institutions, and they ought to be deported. \Ve ought not to naturalize u foreigner and forever after pay no attention to what he says and does. He ought to be on probation always, una me moment ne is shown not to be in sympathy with the institution's he has sworn to protect his naturalisation papers should be taken away from him. Most of us believe in the constitution. For that reason we ought not tolerate the man who seeks to overthrow it, whether ho sails under the name of Socialist, I. W. W. or llolshovist. Sentiment is not dead! Hawker and Grieve have not failed! They have aroused the admiration of u billion human beings. . Yes, the love of the whole World's population, for they have become the anti-climax of the World's war-hate.. They have proved by one brave, unselfish act, that human beings, of all nations, in all parts of the World, will rise as one people to prove that old adage, "One touch of Nature makes the whole world kin." This leap into the unknown, this great adventure, has appealed to the World's imagination, to the hearts of all human beings in which there flows a drop of red blood. The love oi winning against a w rid of odds. Staking their lives with but one chance in a thousand, to do that which no living thing ever did before. Solely for the honor and glory of their country?not for themselves, or for mere money, for Hawker has earned enough not to have to risk his life for a few dollars more. They could not have won more for the good ui muiiKind at tins time if they had actually "got across safely" without incident, for they have been the s afety-valve through which the pent-up human love of fellow man. bo long ^auppr eased by "Wui -hatred, has found E^Sjint and expression. Their very ^ Thrift? tO" ftfCffHtpHsh their daring trip; their supposed death; the mystery, for the unkftown details of what happened were swallowed in space, all added to the instantaneous "expression of feeling" when the news arrived that they wero saved. Almost every man who planted cotton last year had some ^ trouble with the red spider. It is a pest that every cotton farmer should know at this time. wi Shall the 1919 cotton crop be infest- Qf ed with this pest? This depends ((f principally on the individual farmer. The fields should be closely watched. 1 a from the time the cotton is thinned fo until the picking begins. With the S(> first appearance of /the red spider, ca work should begin and be done thor- on oughly?as long as is necessary to get the red spider under control. The following are some of the measure's to adopt in controlling red spider:? 1st: Keep the poke weed down. Tf possible dig or grub up and burn. All poke weed along terraces, ditches. H around stumps or on the border of H fields should be cut down and kept H down all summer. H 2nd: Cut down blackberry' vines B and keep them cut at the same time B the poke weed is cut. H 3rd: Carefully watch the cotton. B The red spider usually starts in a B corner or spots, llo not allow these M spots to enlarge. Pull up all infested B plants that are noticeably infested K spots?pile and burn these stalks on B ! the ground from which they have heen B pulled. |g I 4th: Should these "suits" he too large-to pull up and burn, spray thoroughly when first noticed with lime' sulfur wash (use the concentrated so lutlon) one gallon of the wash to t<>0 of water. The under side of the ] leaves Is the principal part of the ^ plant to spray. Use a pump that will I make a fine spray and will give 100 to 111 c ' 125 pounds pressure, such as a barrel spray pump. ! 6th: The control of the red spider ' depends on this factor: That it must *'a l be stopoed as soon as it begins if pos- in slhle. This requires close observation foi i and quick acting.. yn " at We need to think more about Increasing food apd feed crops and then i we -won't need to talk so much about reducing the cotton crop.
