The preset year promises to be th greatest in the history of the move mentfor the improvement and main tenance of public highways of the Un ted States. A joint committee o congress is engaged in an investiga tion of the feasibility of federal ai< in the construction, improvement an maintenance of public highways, an a number of the state legislatures ar considering good roads legislation. Too much stress cannot be laid uj on the importance of maintenance ii connectionwlth the work of improv ins the roads. The people In nearl a'l the states are filled with the enth: siasm for road improvement and ar spending enormous sums of money i; the construction of good roads, an' vet almost without exception, the; are making little provision to care fo 'Vv roads after they are built. Thi Is true, not only in the various coun ties, but under many of the stat highway departments. To maintain the roads in good con dition, year after year, requires considerable annual outlay, but thi outlay is indefinitely less than th loss which must fall upon people eve: trallv if thev allow their roads to g to utter ruin. The thing for all ad vocates of good roads to do is t urge continuous, systematic mainte nance and the setting aside ever; year of an amount per mile estimat ?d by the engineer in charge to b sufficient for the proper maintenanc . of the road, a course vfhich mus ^ - make for economy and efficiency. ? i tv .natrirnomai uonrs.
