The ditc should be narrow with steep side When the worms fall into it. kill thei by dragging a log up and down throug the ditch. Manure is subject to heavy losse from several sources. For Instann many farmers lose practically all thel liquid manure, yet this contains mor valuable plant food than the solh There are a number of ways to sav stable manure and every farmc should exert himself to get the mo.< possible out of his manure. I M y COTTON WILT; HOW TO r P A recently Wilted Plant side by side wit mon Occurrence.?James Is At this season of the year cotton wilt a is very active; and. reports from vaf' rious sections of the State indicate ' . that this troublesome disease is more , e widespread this season than ever before. Until recently, wilt has been 11 confined to the coastal plain but now 1 >t it is also being reported from the I Piedmont section; so, every farmer in ? the State should lteep a close lookout ' for the disease and as soon as it is ! found take steps to prevent its spread. ' Plants affected with this disease shed their leaves, wilt and die. Upon 1 examination, the wilted plants will be ] in found to be black on the inside. If the ;h stem is split open black streaks are i n found beneath the bark and in the tis- i a- sues of the stem. This black colora- j n- tioii is very characteristic of wilt. i n Cotton wilt Is caused by a fungus ' which grows into the roots and stems ' i of the plants from the soil. It gets < a in H e \ducts and vessels of the i s plants and finally plugs them up; and. J h in i* .s v.iv. cuts off the circulation of l s. water and plant food, causing the j i) plants to wilt and die. This fungus ! h will live iti the soil indefinitely so that 1 ; soil once infected with it will remain I ! diseased for a long time. It might also be carried in drainagewater. Where the disease is found in the fields at this season of the year, precautions should be taken to prevent Its spread. Cut out the diseased patches md do not plow through them, and prevent drainage water from these [jatches from getting on to other part3 of the farm. It is also a good plan to pull up and destroy the diseased plants whore wilt occurs in small patches. When wilt is already prevalent, it can be controlled by the use of disease resistant varieties. The Dixie I and the Dillon are two varieties which I are almost Immune to the trouble. | These varieties are being grown sue- ' cessfully on lands which are so badly diseased that no other varieties will arrow on them at all. The United States Department of Agriculure and Clemson College are co-operalng with \ number of farmers throughout the State In the production of high grade wilt resistant seed and will be glad :o put those who are suffering from wilt in touch with the people who have such seed for sale.
