ARRESTED IN RIKMINGHAM, ALA.

P.-W. Schumpert, the-agent of the
Seaboard and Bennettsviue ana tneraw
railroads at Kollocl:, who disappeared
on the night of July 21, was
arrested in Birmingham, Ala., and
brought back to Bennettsville by J. A.
Jester, special agent of the Seaboard,
at Hamlet, last Friday.
Mr. Jester located and arrested
Schumpert Thursday in Birmingham,
where he was living under the assumed
name of F. H. Summers, ano
was employed as a telegraph operatos
by the Western Union. Mrs. Sehum
pert was with him. They said the>
had be3n in Birmingham practically
ever since they left Kollock, but it is
learned from other sources that they
spent a 6hort time in Atlanta. When
arrested, Mr. Schumpert villingly con-1
sented to come back to South Carolina i
without requsition papers and stand j
trial.

pea~ed from Kollock on the night of j
July 21, leaving the dep.>t keys with
a negro employee. He carred away j
about $1000, of which about $900 belonged
to the Seaboard and the balance
to the B. and C.
Mr. Schumpert is from Newberry
county, and a member of a good family.
It is said that his f ither lives at
Prosperity.

was delayed, awaiting the arrival of
Mr. Schumpert's father, B. B. Schumpert.
J. K. Owens, attorney for
Schumpert, then stated to the court
that the youn gman would waive preliminary,
pending a thoiough examination
of the railroad's books, and that
the father would stand good for any
loss which the books might show.
Judge Powers then fixed the bond at
$500 for his appearance at the March
court which was signed by B. B.
Schumpert. He made oath that he
was worth over $f>00, and this was
confirmed by a telegram from the
Bank of Prosperity. Mr. Schumpert is
a well-to-do merchant at Prosperity.
P. W. Schumpert was then released.
He immediately wired his wife of the
result.

the railroad.

through the South by special train
on the fifth annual "Philadelphia
Trade excursion," will be in Columbia

Mayor Has Been Busy. ; f
Mayor Sprull has been pretty busy , (
the past few days with violators of j
the town ordinances.
On Saturday the police seized from
A. G. McDonald 5 gallons and 3 pints
of liquor. McDonald was arrested
and released on bond of $100 pending
trial. McDonald recently forfeited a
bond of $25 put up for a similar offense.
A closet in the Mayor's office in
which was stored contraband liquor,
was broken open on Sunday and six
quarts was stolen. Suspicion pointed
to Bub Reed and he was arrested.
One pint of the whiskey was found
on Reed's person when arrested. He F
denied stealing It but was found guilty ^
of transporting and was fined $100
or 60 days. He took the days and ^

League asks all who wish to intensify

workers in church and society; there

committee is particularly eager to

There too, is our fine old cemetery,
