Mrs. T. S. Wallace, of Bennettsville, spent yesterday in the city the guest of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Powell. Bennie Thomas, the negro who stole Mr. LaCoste Evans* bicycle, and who was captured by rural policeman McLaurin after a strenuous search lasting" several weeks, was convicted before magistrate Belk, and sent to the gang, escaped therefrom last Sunday. A reward of $15 is offered by the sheriff for his capture. Mrs. Mary Powell is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Charlton Law, near Darlington. The base ball championship of the world was won by the Philadelphia American League team. Miss Maude Greaber, of Morven, N. C., spent the week end with friends in the city. County treasurer I. P. Mangum and Mrs. Mangum, of Chesterfield, were visitors in the city yesterday. Mrs. T. C. Evans and little son, who have been visiting relatives in Charlotte, N. C., have returned home. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Terrell have moved to their home near Orange Hill. Miss Lottie Rogers, of near Rockingham, N. C., is visiting her grandmother, Mrs. R. I. This i affair is always looked for by a great many of our people because of the many home made things appropriate , for Christmas that is to be found there. George Johnson, colored, was sent to the gang on Monday for 30 days for giving a check on one of the local banks in which he' had no money to meet it. The Chronicle regrets to learn that Mr. J. W. Sanders> who has been superintendent of niaijitainance with the telephone company in this town Tor the past several months, will be transferred to Marion, S. C.. within the next few days. Cheraw never had any service worth while until Mr. Sanders was sent here to keep up the system, consequently Cheraw will regret to see him transferred. Moses Hunt, the one-legged colored barber who has been in this city for baebr who has been in this city for a few months following his trade, was arrested on Monday on a warrant charging him with the larceny of several ladies suits from the store of Mr R. Finlavsnn. Thr> drpssps wprp found at the place where Moses put up, and at the same time several articles were found that had been taken from other stores. Moses is languishing in the guard house pending an efort to compromise with his victims. John Rollins, colored, nearly everybody round about knows John, was arrested Friday by rural policeman McLaurin. He had a buggy load of liquor which he said belonged to Joe Malloy, col., and for which he was to receive $3.50 and a pint of liquor for bringing it from Society Hill to Cheraw. Magistrate Belk sent John to the gang for 30 days for transporting liquor, he not coming across with the cash for a fine of $100. John tried mighty hard to play off drunk, and he was pretty well soaked, but when the magistrate pronounced the sentence it was found that John was not as drunk as he had tried to make believe. There is a persistent rumor that Congressman Finley of this district will not be a candidate next year for reelection owing to the impairment of his health from the confinement and climate at Washington, and Mr. W. F. Stevenson has publicly announced that in case Mr. Finley is not a candidate to succeed himself, he will enter the race for the place. Mr. SteStevenson's legislative and legal experience fit him for the work and Chesterfield county will no doubt remember him at the election with a handsome vote. Conference for the Public flood. The Chronicle is informed that a conference for the public good will be held at Chesterfield on Wednesday, November 11th. This being the first day of the Chesterfield County Fair, it is hoped there will be a large at tendance at this very important conference. Full particulars of this meeting will be given later. The meeting of the school trustees association of Chesterfield county, was held at Chesterfield last Saturday. Although .the weather was bad fifty-five trustees, representing practically every section of the county, ! were present. To the surprise and delight of all present. Hon. J. E. Swearingen. State Superintendent of Education was on hand to talk to the trustees, and in a talk of about 50 minutes gave a general resume of the condition of the school situation. His talk was plain and to the point and was much enjoyed by all. After Mr. Swearingen's talk, Superintendent Rouse made a short but interesting talk as also did chairman G. A. Sherrill. Superintendent Rouse introduced Miss Alixina Evans, the recently elected lady supervisor of rural schools. A motion by trustee F. M. Moore, of Mt. Croghan. that a committee of live be appointed to confer with the legislative delegation, asking for a raise in the county superintendent's salary, was unanimously carried. Chairman Sherrill appointed on this committee Messrs. F. M. Moore, D. H. McLauchlin, J. R. Parker, T. B. Watson and C. K. Kirkley.
