Mrs. Brown Sistare and little daughter returned to their home in Lancaster Tuesday morning, after a visit of several days the past week the guests of Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Webb. Among the old "Vets" on hand Monday was Mr. "Bill" Lowery, of Lumberton, N. C., and Mr. J. A. Atkinson, of Hamlet. N. C. These two old "Vets" never fail to be on hand for the annual memorial exercises. Mr. Walter Douglass, of Ruby spent Saturday last in the city. Miss Augusta Hoffman, who has been spending several weeks in the city, the guest of her aunt, Mrs. J. F. Agerton, returned to her home in New York Monday night. Mr. George M. Walter^ has remodeled and painted his dwelling house, corner Church and Christian streets, which has added very much to the appearance of what was always a very pretty building. * Mr. J. A. The Methodist Sunday school and congregation will have their annual pic nic this year at Big Springs, near McBee, on June 3rd. The supreme court has granted a new trial to 0. H. Watson, who was convicted in Kershaw county on the "harge of killing T. E. Gregory and sentenced to four years. The decision was by Cheif Justice Gary, the entire court concurring. BASE BALL IX CHER AW. Cheraw Graded School Boys Cross Rats With Boys of Darlington. Graded School. Reported for The Chronicle. Darlington and Cheraw engaged in a fast game of base ball here Friday which was won by the Darlington boys by a score of 4 to 2. Cheraw had several chances to score again but Brasington was airtight in the pinches. Watson's two errors gave Cheraw their only runs. The features of the game was the catching of Brown and Treacy. Convention The District Sunday School Conference for Florence Distiict will be held this year in Timmonsville, June 30, July 1, and 2. This is an important gathering of Sunday School workers. There are sixty-six SundaySchools in the District and each of them is entitled to two delegates. Rev. J. L. Tyler is District Sunday School Secretory for the (FIdronce District. He says he looks for this meeting in Teimmonsville to be the best Sunday School Conference to be held in this State during this year.? The McBee Courier. The Roanoke Bridge Company Are The Contractors and Will Begin Work at Once. The contract for building the steel bridge over Thompson's Creek, about three miles below Cheraw on the Society Hill road, has been let to the Roanoke Bridge company, of Roanoke Va. The price to be paid for the bridge is $2,666.00, and the bridge is. to be completed by iSeptember 1st. The bridge will consist of one steel span to rest on concrete abutments, one on each side of the creek. The bridge will be built just above the old wooden bridge and this old structure is to remain intact until the new bridge is completed and accepted bj the authorities. As soon as this steel bridge is com pleted work will be begun on the I'oaa leading to the bridge'froiinn Cheraw side. This road is to be fill ed in and built up from two to foui feet which will insure a free passage for buggies and other vehicles at al times irrespective of the volume oi water in the creek, and the road or the other side of the creek is to b( worked over also and put in good condition. While this is going on th< bridge over Juniper run is not to b< overlooked. This bridge is also going to be made over and by the tim< township commissioner, G. A. Sherrill and County Supervisor H. F. King get through with this stretch of road and the bridges, Cheraw township will have such a travel way as our friendj in Steerpen and Alligator townshii will be glad to connect with. Steel Bridge Over Whortleberry Sow Being Bnllt. The contract for putting a steel bridge over Whortleberry creek Jusl beyond the town limits on the Wadesboro road was let by township commissioner Sherrill to Mr. A. D. Chapman several days ago and is now about completed. This bridge consists of one steel span 44 feet long, anchored to concrete abutments on each side of the creek. The bridge is three feet high er tnan tne oia Driage was ana rne road Is to be raised in the same proportion. The little bridge nearest the town is to be done away with. It is the intention to divert the stream of water that passes this way. by canal, to the larger stream so that all the water will pass under the steel bridge. A large culvert will be placed where this small bridge now is in order that there will be no i I ponding of water against the emj bankment of the road when it rains. . Cheraw township i3 setting the pace in putting in these steel bridges I and it is not going to be long before | the other townships in the county will be doing likewise, as they will find that it will be money saved to the townhsips by putting in permanent improvements.
