THIRTY DAYS GIVEN TO COMPLY WITH ORDERS. A letter from the office of (lie railroad commissioners brings the information that the Chesterfield & Lancaster Railroad authorities had been given thirty days from April 30th, to comply with the orders recently promulgated by the commission in regard to schedules, coaches, etc. It is to be hoped that something will be done this time. It is an out-! rage 'not only ?upon J.he traveling public but upon the people of Ches-j terfield the way this road is now be-.1 T..?* K.. wo,. nf il_ ing opertueu. ?iuoi uj w .? , lustratiton: Last 'Monday the train: was .reported at Chesterfield as hav-j ing left Pageland on time but it was, 40 minutes late on arrival' at Ches- j terfield, having lost the time, we sup-) pose, handling freight at the stations between; and although it was due to arrive in Cheraw at 4.40 it was about 5.30 when it rolled up to the station. No, beg pardon; only the engine rolled up to the station. The beautiful month of May, while it comes to us with the fragrance of flowers and much that i3 cheerful and beautiful, yet it also brings to us Memorial Day and with it many sad I memories. All of us are not indebted to history for our knowledge of the greatest of national crisis. Many remember it and the fathers and mothers now living had better keep telling that story to their children, so that instead of their being dependent upon cold type such as is to be found in most of the histories now being taught in all of our schools which tells the story only from the standpoint of "the other side," they will be able to say, "I know, because my father told me so!" "My mother tolu me so!" Men and women who vividly remember 1861-2-3-4, be yourselves historians telling it, not with pen hut with living tongue and voice and gesture. That is the great use of Memorial Decoration Day. for the flowers on ilie grave tops soon become breathless of perfume and in a week turn to dust like unto that which lies beneath them. But the story of courage and self-sacrifice and patriotism told 011 platforms and in house-holds and by the roadside and in churches and in Cemeteries, ,by tjiat {annual recital will he kept fresh in the memories of generations as long as our American institutions are worthy of preservation. Cheraw. Some Fine Farms. Editor Courier:?A few days ago the writer was invited to take a trip with Dr. J. D. Ingram to the various Farms owned and operated by him in | the lower part of this county. On this particular trip Mr. Frank Sanjilers. Dr. Ingram's overseer, left his fine saddle horse at home and made the trip with us in the doctor's touring car. The fiist farm we visited was what lis known as the Bell farm, which is being worked on shares by Mr. J. C. Stokes, who is a splendid farmer and will make a bale of cotton on every acre this year if the rains come in the right time. Mr. Sanders told the writer that during the past winter he had removed from this farm more than three thousand stumps at a cost of ten cents each. The removal of these stumps, of course, put the lands in fine shape and this farm can easily be classed as one of the finest faiyns in CheBterfleld county. We next visited the R. S. Grant - ay .ililHiMl' Iff > - ' 1. tr-Tf-r.. Ingram. Thi?farm is known ijy allinost every body in Chesterfield county to be one of the best managed and (most productive farms in the county. | Last, but by no means least, we visited the new farm two miles east ! of town on the S. C. W. railroad. On jthi? farm Mr. Sanders has two hundred and fifty-eight acres in cultivaI on/1 ovnoolc (n nnon lin two him dred acres more next season. Among other things Mr. Sanders is planting fifty acres in velvet beans for soil improvement. This farm bids fair to become one of the very best farms in Chesterfield county. Mr. Sanders has on these different farms more than three hundred acres of long stape cotton planted and expects an average of one bale to the acre.?A. J. R. in the McBee Courier. Hostess Hits on Right Di6hes for Dyspeptic and Woman Who Was Reducing Weight. When the Lawtons had lived in Wil- 01 low Park about a month, they were 1 Invited to a succession of little din- J ners at the houses of their new neigh- ' bors. Mr. Lawton was on a dyspeptic diet, and Mrs. Lawton was endeavoring to reduce her weight. "I suppose we shall have to eat all sorts of things we don't wish, or else seem rude," said Mrs. Lawtou, mournfully, as they set out for the first dinuer. To their growing surprise, the bills of fare placed before them at each }j dinner, although not remarkably var- 9 i^d, were all composed of such dishes J as they could both enjoy. "I don't see how you all hit on just the right thing, when Mr. Lawton and I really are such diiUcult guests," said Mrs. Lawton in a burst of confidence one afternon when the neighbors were "1 taking tea with her. T The ladies locked at each other, and ^ then one of them spoke. "You know Mary Sloan, who comes to wash for you Tuesday mornings?" she said. "Well, I have her Mondays, and Mrs. Greeu has her Wednesdays, F and she irons for Mrs. Porter Thursdays, and scrubs for Miss I-lomer Fri days, so you see?" Her voice trailed off into silence, but Mrs. Lawton no longer wondered; sne saw. TO HIDE CHEAP WOODWORK > Proper Treatment With Paint Will Turn the Hidecus Into the Dainty and Beautiful. When the woodwork in the rented VV or bought house seems se cheap and If hideous as to be absolutely hopeless, g| which often appears to be the case, pj stain it black. This will hide the de- j fccts and give a great deal of style to the rooms if used with red or green or orange or blue paper, but will not &i look so well with deHcate shados. tfc White enamel paint always gives a dainty effect, but it is quite expensive .to put on, and cannot be done by an amateur, while a sort of stain can be 4 made with black paint, diluted onethird with turpentine, that is easily applied by the inexperienced and will give a very much more stylish tone to the room than a poor imitation oak flfeMuiv, - Tho/^-eame treatment} may be tui^d to rejuvenate an old Morris chair, that is comfortable but whose yellow varnished arms have become too hideous to be endured. Old wood picture frames will bo improved by the same treatment. But if these * are really mahogany or real walnut do not paint them, merely sandpaper them and stain with a stain that can be purchased at the paint store. More Treasures Leave England. ^ One of the best preserved masterpieces of Elizabethan interior decoration in England is doomed to be dismantled ia order to adorn the mansion of some American magnate. A West End firm has acquired, lock, stock and barrel, the Elizabethan building, with its Queen Anne additions, known as Rotherwas, the seat of the Bodenliam family, situated about two and a half miles from 1 Hereford. The mansion had descend- H ed in unbroken line from George jt Bodenham, who lived in the reign of Henry I. to Count Lubienski Bodeaham, who died last year.
