There seems to be something originally and inherently strong about the man with a single name. Take John Smith, for instance, the hero of pioneer history in the American colonies. What name has received higher honor, or shows a more sturdy character in the man who bore it? Our early Anglo-Saxon ancestors of the "good old days" were not burdened with a multitude of cogomens; but were simple John and James and William and Richard and Thomas; till in the course of time, and the increase in the family, it became necessary to distinguish John's son from William's and then the son of John was called "John's son", or Johnson, while William's son became Williamson. John, the smoother or smith, became John Smith; Thomas, the shepherd, became Thomas Shepherd; William, the carpenter, became William Carpenter? and in many and various ways given names, as well as surnames, were applied, and became fixed and established. But it 1b not the purpose to gointo the history and reason of surnames; which, by the way, is a most attractive study. If one withes to delve into the subject, let him get Dr. J. Walter Daniel's excellent book on "Surnames" and read that. He will find it a very Interesting and instructive little book. Speaking of men with one given name: Have you ever run over the list , of the presidents of the United States and noticed how many of (hen have onlly one?
