Second Day's Work. Columbia, July 21>.?The State Farmers Union meeting came to a close tor night after q. hard day's work. After listening to a speech of J. R. Patten, of Washington, D. C., who is in charge of restricting immigration strong resolutions were adopted protesting against the bringing into the Southland of "undesirab e foreigners." The committee on education ur^ed the Union to consider the vita importance of the coininou schools that the ouildings and equipment be improved. The committee called attention to the "disgrace to our Anglo-Saxon blood that we should let our ohildreu be shut up in unsanitary school houses for several hours each day." The committee urged that attention be given to agriculture In the schools.. i'he committee commended the work of the boys clubs in corn and the glr s lomatoe clubs. A very important action was the endorsement of drainage, the reso ution concluding with the statement that the State department of agriculture draft a measure to be presented at the next session of the Legislature providing for systematic drainage of territory needing it, at a minimum tax on the land drained. Another important act was that fixing standard grades for cotton. The following is the resolution adopted: "That we call upon our Legislators to see that there is placed in every Court House in the State standard cotton samples, to be kept by the clerk of court or county supervisor, where any grower may compa e his cotton with the samples and determine its grade. And that incabe of differences be-" tween buyer and sel er that the standard samples fix the grade." The Legislature was also called upon to greatly increase the number of agricultural scholarships at Clemson College. After other important matters had been disposed of the meeting adadjourned. English Is not only, as Richard Jef ferles asserted, the most expr?ssive and flexible of tongues, but aluo. In Swinburne's opinion, the most musical. He proclaimed the linesMusic that gentller on the spirit lies ! Than tired eyelids upon tired eyes to be unmatched for melody In any language. And few would venture to contradict such a master of music and tongues. But surely French ranks next on the roll of languages. For clearness of diction It Is unrivaled, and, thanks to Its abundance of vowels (close on one for every consonant) It flowes rhythmically from the tongue. Against Westley's dictum, that French is to German as a bagpipe to an organ, may be cited a saying of another famous divine. Dr. Dolllnger. "L'Allemand n'est pas une langue, mals ceux qui parlent ce Jargon se comprennent entre eaux" (German Is not a language, but those who speak this jar J-?a a ???, snAthari T/inHnn gUU UllUUHlgUU UUC uuuiuci/. uuuuv. Chronicle. Fact* About Giant*. That very few of the giants who have ever lived have been healthy or well formed recent researches prove beyond a doubt All we know about Goliath Is that he was very tall, but In the second book of Kings we read about another giant, who had more fingers than an ordinary bumnn being, and. according to modern scientists, this Is invariably a token of degeneracy. Marcel Donnal saw at Milan a giant who was so tall that his body filled two beds at night, but whose legs were so weak that he could hardly stand upright. William Evans, the ~i ?i? ChaHon I., had little ?i?au liV, pVi ICl U1 VMM* ? , strength, and Cromwell's porter, another giant, ended his days In a lunatic asylum. Finally, O'Brien, the Irish giant, has been described as "an enormous sick child who grew up too fast" ? Another F?l<e. I "Did ycu see the 'lightning calculator' In the sideshow?" asked the old farmer In the wide Htraw hat. j "By heck, yes," drawled the other rurallte, "and he was the biggest fake | In the show." "How was that?" "Why, thar was a thunderstorm going on while 1 was In the tent and when I asked him If he could calculate where the lightning was going to strike he Just gave me the laugh."?Chicago News. An Ominoua Symptom. "A good wife Is heaven's greatest gift to man and the rarest gem the earth holds," remarked Mr. Jarphly the other morning. "She la his Joy, his Inspiration and his very soul. "J iremiah, what wickedness have you b wa up to aowT i i I How often do you ' eat this food? A short time igo there appeared in the columns of one of the prominent magazines an article on building brain and muscle by the proper selection of the foods you eat A good many people wrere surprised to find oatmeal placed at the top of the list of foods recommended; but if the article had appeared in an English or Scotch paper every reader would have expected to see first place given to good oatmeal. As a matter of fact Great Britian and Europe come to us for tremendous quantities of Quaker Oats because it represents totnem perfect food, being the richest in flavor and best in cleanliness and Duritv. of all oatmeals. The rapidly approaching aeaaon will unquestionably be the best In the history of Wrightsvllle and Carolina Beaches, the delightful summer resorts In close proximity to Wilmington. Practically every organization of importance will meet at Wilmington and Wrightsvllle between June 1st, and September 1st, among which are the United Commercial Travelers of the Carolinas, the North Carolina Press Association, North Carolina Good Roads Association; State Medical Society, State Dental Society, the Bar Association, [ the Bankers' Association, State Couucll, Jr. O. U. A. M., the North Carolina Architects, and probably others. < Nearly, if not quite all, the associations will take a side trip down the Cape Fear river with probably a stop at Carolina Beach, as no trip to Wilmington is complete without a trip on the steamer Wilmington. One of the most Important of the many improvement at Wrightsvllle | Beach is the enlargement of Tarry| moore Hotel. Mr. W. J. Moore, manager, the excellent hotel having added another wing to the north of the old part, in which are 60 well appointed rooms and equipped with all the convenences of a modern hostelry. The addition extends out toward the ocean and is so arranged that every room commands a view of the ocean. The extension is built on concrete piers, and is connected with th'e old part of the hotel by spacious verandas. Of equal, if not greater importance is the extensive improvements at the Seashore Hotel, Mr. Edgar L. Hinton, manager. A steel pier has been constructed from the rear entrance of the hotel to extend 700 feet out into the ocean. The Pier is 30 feet wide the greater part of its length and out at the end is 50 feet wide. . At the end of the pier will bg erected a two-story building to be used for concerts, dances and other forms of amusement The roof of the building will be used as observation veranda, from which a fine view of the beach can be had. The pier Is really a continuation of the hotel veranda. The pier will be greatly patronized by Ashing parties as well as for the different forms of amusement mentioned above. Besides the pier, the Seashore has enlarged its capacity by the addition of 80 rooms, in a wing extending to the north of the other part along the ocean front. With this addition the Seashore Hotel now has 250 well equipped rooms Lumina, North Carolina's pleasure palace, has also been improved, or rather the approach to the amusement resort has been greatly improved and beautified by the removal of all small buildings, leaving Lumina standing conspicuously out in an open, clear space. Additions have been built to nearly all of the many high-class boarding five to twenty rooms each. Down at Carolina Beach, where so many Wllmingtonians and out-oftown visitors like to sojourn, a number of improvements have been made and visitors this season will find the resort even more attractive than ev?r and a trip on the steamer Wilmington is one that should not be missed. Some stop at the beach and others will go on to Southport, from whence they will take the delightful trip out to sea. Everything points to probably one of the best seasons in the history of the resorts around Wilmington and many new races, as wen as iaminar unes, will be seen here during the summer. The Atlantic Coast Line is offering an attractive line of excursion rates rates from several hundred points in the Carolinas to Wilmington aner Wrlghtsville Beach, particulars regarding which can be obtained from their agents, and the Tidewater Power Company and the Harper Line of Steamers is keeping up to a high standard its splendid service between Wilmington and the beach.?Morning Star, Wilmington, N.
