SCARED THE ROBBERS. Odd Incident In England In the Eighteenth Century. For a time during the eighteenth century in England there was a lull In the robbery Industry owing to an odd incident Shortly after the execution of an English burglar named Elllston a curious communication purporting to hare been written by him was put into circulation. "Now, as I am a dying man." it ran, "I have done something which may be of good use to the public. I have left with an honest man?the only honest man I was ever acquainted with?the names of all my wicked brethren, the places of their abode, with a short account of the chief crimes they have committed, in many of which I have been the accomplice and heard the rest from their own mouths. I have likewise set down the names of those we call our setters, of the bouses we frequent and all of those who receive and buy our stolen goods. I have solemnly charged this honest man and have received his promise upon oath that whenever he hears of any rogue to be tried for robbery or housebreaking he will look into his list and if he finds there the name of the thief concerned to send the whole paper to the government Of this I here give my companions fair and pnbllc warning and hope they will take It" It Is said the hint was so effectual that for a long time pickpockets and burglhrs in that part of England went Into panic stricken retirement And, this being so, It Is Just as well they did not know that the letter was a clever forgery, the work of that prince of wits and humorists. Henrlet and Bonyasy, ozone Is produced by the ultra violet rays of the sun In the up? enr atmosphere, and the amount con tained In the air near the ground increases when air currents descend from the upper regions. Sometimes also It Increases during rains. It has been observed that there is a reduction of the proportion of carbonic acid in the air when the amount of ozone increases. This is regarded as an indirect effect due to dilution of the lower air by the purer air descending from above. Hh More people are taking Foley's Kidney Remedy every year. They nre uot to be counted. Here Is one that was played quite recently. A dealer ordered from an artist u tavern scene in the old Dutch style signed lu the corner with a fa In.lie of Jan Steen's signature. When the smoky look of age had been given it the dealer eyed It with approval. "Splendid!" he said to the ueedy urtlst. "It's a pity you shouldn't have the credit of It. Pray sign it with your own name. It may make your reputation." The poor artist, delighted, painted ?? Via clunohirn nf T:in StePn and HPt V1 Ci vut OiguukUkv V* *% his own name there. Three weeks later the picture started for New York, consigned to a Fifth avenue merchant of paintings. But by the same boat went an anonymous letter to the custom house officials warning them that an attempt was being made to smuggle in a'chef d'oeuvre of the Dutch school worth $40,000. The picture was seized. Experts were called In. They scraped off the signature of the artist and found underneath that of Jan Steen. The Importer had to pay a fine of 50 per cent?that Is, $20,000?and In addition $8,000 duty. Three days later, I however, he sold his Jan Steen (guaranteed by the United States government) for the round sum of $50,000. One day during the rehearsals of "The Tempest," which opens with a storm at sea, all the actors except Beerbohm Tree knew that a real storm was raging outside the theater. Mr. Tree never knows anything at rehearsal time except that he wants to get the best possible out of his company. He was especially anxious that the opening scene should be rendered as true to nature as possible, and time after time he made the men whose duty it was to suggest to the audience the ungovernable fun' of the elements repeat their efforts. Presently a blinding flash of lightning, followed by a deafening peal of thunder, swept through a narrow window above the scene dock and illuminated the stage. "That's better," announced Mr. Tree, "but I think it could be improved upon." "If you please, sir," observed the master carpenter, "that was a real one." In the old days when the Spanish province of Axagon was n proud and Independent monarchy the people used when choosing their king the following singular form of election: "We, the freeborn Inhabitants of the ancient kingdom of Aragon, who are equal to you, Don Philip, and something more, elect you to be our king on condition that you preserve to us our rights and privileges. If In this you should fall we own you tor our king no longer." S Oysttr farming. Oyster cultivatiA is not an American idea. Histori tells of the early Bomans having ^Steht oyster fry on branches and ?fed oysters quite successfully, andlrom time to time this and other methods of cultivation have been attempted in various European countries. Oyster farmingrin America dates back to the year 1351, when certain East river (New 'fork) oystermen, observing that ypung oysters fastened in great numbers to the shells of other oysters, started the practice of shelling their b^ds and the ground contiguous to t^era just before spawning time. It would be hajd to find a better definition of oyster cultivation than submarine agriculture?for as the farmer so must the oysterman prepare, seed and cultivate his land. As with the farmer also, eternal vigilance is the one price of success, for weeds will grow, waste matter will accumulate, enemies will lie in wait.?National Magazine.
