Kuyken dall, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence C. Kuykendall, Route 1, Clinton, completed on Octo- ber 28 a 12-week parachute packing, maintenance and air drop course at the U. S. Army Quartermaster School, Ft. Lee, Ya. The course is divided into three phases of instruction. During the first phase, students learn to pack the personnel troop back, emergency and re serve, and small cargo type parachutes. Students then learn to pack large cargo parachutes and rig vehicles and other items to lie airdropped. They also receive instruction in loading equip ment on the aircraft and se curing it for flight in addition to inflight preparation of loads for airdrop. The third phase includes in struction in the basic main tenance and repair procedures for all parachutes and other air drop equipment. Pvt. Kuykendall’s wife, Dena lives on Phillips St., Clinton. Steps In Falling Away (Continued from last week) The second step In Falling-Away is progres sive and unless checked leads to the third step in TURNING BACK This is as some of our Lord’s disciples, who went or turned back and walked no more with Him (Jon. 6:66) His teach ing was strict, too narrow, to restrictive. It required self-denial and ministering to others. It demanded love of God with the whole being and love of neighbor as self. The soldier of the Lord who turns back is a deserter from the Lords army. He is a disgrace to his profession—to his holy calling. Demas was such a one. He loved this present world more than the Lord. (2 Tim. 4:10) Hymenaeus and Alexander denied the faith. (1 Tim. 1:19-20) In this state the disciple no longer assembles with the saints to worship. Bible study is neglected, Prayers no longer pass his lips. He becomes dead spiritual ly. The Bible says that this state is worse than before he was saved. He is as “a sow after wash ing, returns to wallowing in the mire. (2 Peter 2:22) One who remains very long in a state of re bellion against God, indulging his fleshy desires, defiling his conscience and giving no thought of religious things is in great danger of taking the final and fatal step of FALLING BACK into PERDITNON. Isaiah wrote of rebellious fleshly Israel, "that they may go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.” (Isa. 28:13) A bad habit nurtured for a long time becomes so integral a part of the person that giving up the habit may be impossible. The will power is not strong enough to break it. A conscience disre garded for a long time may be so hardened and seared that the gospel is unable to reach the heart. Exopsure to modernistic of atheistic teaching may destroy faith so completely that it cannot be restored. When the fallen discipla reaches any of these states it is impossible to renew him to repentance. (Heb. 6:4-6) He has become an apostate. He has fallen backward to be broken. He has shrunk back to the point where destruction awaits. He has only the ex pectation of condemnation. The only safe course, therefore, is to resist the desire to look back. If so the other steps cannot follow. We must reach for the thing’s which lie ahead, striving for the prize in Christ Jesus, adding to ourselves all the graces of attri bute given in 2 Pet. 1:5-7; Always looking unto Jesus as our example, teacher and authority. If this we do, we will never turn back from lollow- ing Jesus, but will finally have an abundant en trance into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Carlay, plant en gineer for The Torrington Company of Clinton, will be an instructor for a 12-week course for wastewater treatment plant operators at Piedmont Techni cal Education Center in Green wood. Carlay, a mechanical en gineering graduate of Clemson University, has eight years of experience in the design, maintenance, and operation of sanitation and industrial waste treatment facilities. He is a member of the South Carolina Water and Pollution Control Association. The program Is to start on Nov. 30 and sessions will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings through March 3. Classes will meet for four- hour periods, from 6:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. The cost is $15 per particinant. Designed for both industrial and municipal application, the course will prepare operator* for attainment of a Claa* Certificate. * * * The fellow who always gets his own way has a very clever wife. Peaman We Need To Feed The Soul •X* BY DR. SPAUGH “A bad beginning makes a good ending.’’ How often have.’ you heard this? It is not al ways true by any manner or means. The reason so many of us have bad days is because we start badly. Often we stayed up too late the night before. As a result we would be in bed until the last minute in the morning, then rush down, snatch a few mouthfuls of breakfast on the way to work. Perhaps we didn’t eat any breakfast at all. You can never treat apiece of machinery that way and get the best of results. A gradual start and a good lubrication are essential. The factory boiler must be fired up to produce power for the machinery opera tion. We treat our bodies just the opposite and our souls just as bad. No breakfast, no fuel in the boiler. Little breakfast, little fuel'in the boiler. The results is the creaking bodily machine, irritability, things going wrong. Most of us know that, when we stop to think about it, but too few do anything about it. Food for the soul is just as necessary as food for the body, if we would have a good start for the day. Physicans and ministers recognize that. The physical as well as the spiritual machine should be running smoothly before the day’s load is put on it. In my scrapbook is this poem by Bishop Ralph Cushman which I’ve treasured for years: THE SECRET “I met God in the morning, When the day was at its best. And His presence came like sunrise, Like a glory in my bceast.,. “All day long the presence lingered, All day long He stay ed with me, And we sailed with perfect calmness, O’er a very troubled sea. “Other ships were blown and battered, Other ships were sore distressed, But the winds that seemed to drivethem, Brought to us perfect rest. “Then I thought of other mornings, With a keen remorse of mind, When I too had loosed the moorings, With Thy pre sence left behind. “So I think I know the secret learned, From many a troubled way, You must seek Him in the morning, If you want Him through the day.” “A bad beginning means a good ending" is one of those proverbs which rarely bold water. Sometimes this is trntf because a bad beginning com pels us to realize that we can’t go on that way. Then we go back and do what we should have done at the start.
