A native of Cherokee County, he had lived near Clinton since 1936. A son of the late E. B. and Nannie Spencer Whelchel, he was a retired employe of Greenwood Mills at Joanna and a member of Beaver Dam Bap tist Church where he served as deacon, Sunday School superin tendent and Training Union di rector. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lola Carpenter Whelchel; two daughters, Mrs. Frances W. Roper of Laurens and Mrs. Norma Hedges of Killeen, Tex.; two adopted daughters, Miss Kathy M. Whelchel and Miss Sarah F. “Sissy* Whelchel of the home; a son, Melvin Whel chel Jr. of Atlanta, ID., and Ernest Whelchel of Spruce Pine, N. C.; five sisters, Mrs. S. B. Earl and Mrs. Inez Dover of Gaffney, Mrs. Lorene Bookout and Mrs. Delma Gordon of Blacksburg and Mrs. Ruby Tuc ker of Rock Hill; his step mother, Mrs. Catherine Mull- nax of Gaffhey; and two half- sisters, Mrs. Margaret Turner and Miss Sudle Whelchel of Gaffhey. B. L Roberson Bennie Lee Roberson, 44, died Saturday. A son of the late Bob and Minnie Roberson, he was a member of Bush River Baptist Church, Newberry. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Aline Kinard Roberson; a dau ghter, Miss Jacqullne Roberson of the home; two step-daugh ters, Mrs. Josephine Glenn and Miss Joel Kinard of Clinton; two step-sons, Robert Lewis and J. W. Kinard of Clinton; a sister, Mrs. Pearlle Mae Robertson of Clinton and seven brothers, J. W. Pitts and Clarence, Jessie, Walter and Robert Roberson of Clinton, Olen Roberson of Jo anna and George Roberson of Newberry. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Bush River Baptist Church, Newberry County. Burial was in the church ceme tery. Hardman Infant PBGAH FOREST, N. C. - Clifford Neil Hardman, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Hardman died Thursday. Other survivors include grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fern Y. Hardman of Clinton and Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Sto vall of Greenville. Graveside services were conducted Saturday morning at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville. Swyqert Infant JOANNA - Christopher Swy- gert, infant son of Don S. and Linda Davenport Swygert of 501 B Magnolia St., died Tuesday in Clinton. Surviving also are his grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Swygert and Mr. and Mrs. M.J. Davenport of Joanna; his great- grandparents, Mrs. Hermie Wood of Newberry and Mr. and Mrs. P. F. Swygert, Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Davenport Sr. and Mrs. SwanneyWicker of Jo anna; and his great-great grandmother, Mrs. Belle Tew of Ridgeway. She was the step mother of Haskell Williams of Clinton. Funeral services were held Sunday atSecondBaptistChurch with burial in the Garden of Memories. E. D. Goodwin E. D. Goodwin, 79, of 4940 Oakhill Road, Columbia, died Thursday in Medicenter. Mr. Goodv/in was born in Lau rens County, a son of the late Senator and Mrs. O. P. Goodwin. He was a retired salesman and a member of First Presbyterian Church and was active in Cub Scout work. Campbell, 63, of 110 E. Wil burn Street, died Monday. He was a borther of James W. Campbell of Clinton. Other survivers include his wife, three daughters, two sons, two step-daughters, a stepson, two sisters, another brother, 33 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were con ducted Wednesday at The Mackey Mortuary with burial in Graceland Cemetery. Sgt. Crain EDENS, N. C.-Sgt. Thomas Joe Crain, 53, of Route 1, Ed ens, died Monday. A native of Laurens County, he was a bro ther of Mrs. Jessie C. Madden of Clinton and Robert L. Crain of Joanna. Other survivers include a d£.*.ghter, a son, three other sisters, five other brothers and eight grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home in Greenville with burial in Woodlawn Me morial Parkwith military rites. * * * Peary’s Companions There were no white men accompanying Robert Peary on his final dash to the North Pole. His Negro servant, Matthew Henson, and four Eskimos were with him. Broad Street Study Series Gpens Sunday A special series of study ses sions for all age groups will be gin Sunday night atBroadStreet United Methodist Church. These sessions will run from 6:30 to 8:00, and will continue for eight consecutive Sunday evenings, climaxing with a congregational dinner on November 1. The adults will have a series of study and interest groups from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Leader on the opening night will be Dr. James Barrett, president of Spartanburg Junior College. His discussion will be centered a- round the present status and the future of the small, church re lated college. Youth sessions also will run from 6:30 to 7:15, with the Junior Highs studying a New Testament course, “To Tell A Mystery*, taught by John Bing ham. The Senior Highs will study “Making Decisions Ethi cally* under the leadership of Don Graziano. The youth and adults will having a closing worship ser vice together in the sanctuary at 7:30. Dr. Barrett will con duct this service Sunday even ing. The children will have class sessions by age groups, and will have two sessions with a break for refreshments.
