C., July 30, 1970—1-C Dorr, Helicons Attend Furman Pastors' School Two Baptist ministers from Clinton attended the annual Fur man University’s Pastors’ School June 27 through July 3. Rev. Joseph H. Darr and Rev. M. Floyd Hellams heard lectures by four prominent thelogians, Dr. Samuel Terrien of the Union Theological Semi nary; Dr. Thomas McDill of the Columbia Theological Seminary of Georgia; Dr. Samuel Proc tor of Rutgers University; and Dr. Frank Stare of the South ern Baptist Theological Semi nary. The Furman chaplain’s of fice, headed by Dr. L. D. John son, sponsored the school. Rev. Darr is the pastor at the First Baptist Church of Clinton, and Rev. Hellams is the pastor of the Davidson Street Baptist Church. 4t * * Visitors to South Carolina’s 28 state parks have increased by 87% since 1967. 5,033,809 people visited state parks in the 1969-70 season. 3,482,529 park visitors were counted in 1967. Truluck, Chairman CALLING STATESIDE—The USO Stateside Tele phone Service has been extended to the GOLDEN GATE USO in Danang so that American military in that area can make calls back to the “world.'’ This is one of the most popular services offered by the USO in Vietnam. Here we have AIC Robert M. Reynolds talking on the telephone. His father, W. J. Reynolds, Sr., lives in Clinton. The Call Home Program began in December, 1965. During the early days an average of 75 calls a day were made. The growth has been tremendous and now there are 27 locations providing telephone service for our American troops. However all calls go through the telephone office at the Saigon USO. During the month of June 21,074 calls were completed County Forestry Board Reviews State Program The annual meeting of the Laurens County Forestry Board was held on Wednesday, July 8, to review the S. C. State Commission of Forestry’s pro gram in the county, according to Tom Hill, Laurens County Ranger. Highlights of Forestry Com mission activities and accomp lishments in forest fire pre vention and control, reforesta tion, and forest management assistance program during the past fiscal year were given. In summarizing the fire control activities, it was noted that 106 wild fires burned 653.7 acres. This compares with 45 fires that burned 207 acres, last fiscal year. Hill states that this is the largest number of fires for any one year period in several years. During the past fiscal year Laurens County personnel pre sented 42 fire prevention pro grams to various groups in the county. Following a Review of the 1969-70 accomplishments, the Board discussed plans for the county for the 1970-71 fiscal year. Burnside Ordination Slated At Rock Bridge Mr. Gerrold Clark Burnside will be ordained and installed as minister of Rock Bridge Presbyterian Church on Sunday August 2, at 8:00 p.m. at the church. The church is located approximately four miles from Clinton on the Greenwood High way. The Reverend W. F. Mitchell Executive Secretary and State Clerk oftheSouth Carolina Presbytery, will preside and propound the questions. Others serving on the commission to ordain and install Mr. Burn side will be the Rev. A. L. Bixler, who will deliver the sermon; Dr. M. A. MacDonald, who will charge the minister; Mr. G. C. Mclnvaile, who will charge the congregation; Mr. Hugh Jacobs who will offer a prayer of ordination. Also ser ving on the commission will be Mr. W. C. Baldwin, an elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Clinton. Mr. Burnside is the son of Mrs. Mary J. Rollins and the late W. H. BURNSIDE Hill. He graduated from Erskine College, Due West, with an A. B. degree. While attending Erskine Mr. Burnside was a member of the Erskine Play ers, Euphemian Literary Society, and the Soccer team. Mr. Burnside attended Erskine Seminary and was graduated from Columbia Thelogical Seminary, Decatur, Georgia, in June 1970, with a Masters of Divinity Degree. Mr. Burnside has served sev eral churches in South Carolina Adair Attends ROTC Camp At Ft. Bragg Cadet Henry D. Adair, son of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Y. Adair, 509 N. Adair St., Clin ton, is receiving six weeks practical application in mili tary leadership at the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps’ advanced summer camp at Ft. Bragg, N. C. He is one of approximately 17,000 young men expected to attend ROTC summer camps at various military installations throughout the nation. While at camp, the cadet will train as a small unit leader and instructor in realistic exer cises, and receive command ex perience and an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in the field. Adair is a student at Presby terian College. He is a member of Pi Kappa Pi fraternity. Presbytery as Student Supply. In the summer of 1966, he was assistant pastor of the Plains Presbyterian Church in Zachary, Lousiana. For the past three and one-half years Mr. Burnside has been serving the Rock Bridge Presbyterian Church as supply pastor. The ordination and installa tion service will be preceded by a picnic at 6:30 at the church.
