I b 4-C—THE CHRONICLE, Clinton, S. C. t June 26, 1970 Sanitation, Chemicals Can Help Control Flies BY M. L. OUTZ County Agent Flies are the number one pest for Laurens County citi zens. The fly population in- the year, and will continue to build as the season progresses. The recommended formulas for control are screening, sanita tion, and the use of chemicals. Of course, screening is impos- to follow a program of sani tation, together with chemicals. Scientists tell us that one house fly will lay as many as 600 eggs, and a generation may develop in less than two weeks. So one small fly may have as many as 10 generations during a season. It becomes very important that we practice sanitation. As we know, flies normally must have moisture and compost for breeding, or some other organic material, so it becomes import ant that we keep clean to eli minate the breeding places. If we do our best from a sanita tion standpoint, then we can go t to chemicals for the cleanup. creases greatly at this time of sible in any cases, so we have Dr. Kissam, from Clemson, was visiting in Laurens last Weighs only 68 lbs. - Carry-Out • •. plug into any adequate household circuit Ll« 4-hjtpXjiflJr Model AHPQ606F 6000 BTU Cooling Capacity, 7Vi amps., HS-volt operation Lorrk far tRje \ foLpi-crLixir □ Iff e.r e_n_cie Two whisper-quiet fan speeds • Five position air director o Ventila tion control • Adjustable thermo stat control • Quiet rotary compres sor o Aluminum rear grill • Rust- Guardian finish Imagine This Nylon Carpet In Your Home Only * 5 00 sq. yd. He recommended a very strict sanitation program, followed by the use of a 1% solution of Cy- gon as a residual spray for out door problems. He also recom mended several chemicals that I will not name for inside use. If anyone would like to have this list, please call, as it is an extended list. One very import ant method of fly control, ac cording to Dr. Kissam, is sugar baits. This material is made with concentrated chemicals such as Vapona and Dibrom, and then the sugar bait is scat tered in areas where flies are feeding. Of course, the sugar would attract the flies imme diately, and these materials would kill the flies. There are many different chemicals a- vailable to use, but we would recommend that SANITATION be the number one method of at tack, as the breeding places should be held to a minimum. TIPS FROM CLEMSON HOME & WEEKLY CROSSWORD PUZZLE Meaty Matters (EDITOR’S NOTE: Informa tion in this column is supplied by Extension specialists and faculty members of Clemson University. Readers are invited to submit questions. Address to, Editor Home & Outdoors, care of this newspaper.) Hogs are beautiful! That is what we were told in Columbia last week at the Pork-O-Rama. Laurens County was well repre sented with approximately 15 persons from the County. Sur prising to everyone was the fact that there were more than I, 000 people in attendance at this event. Two carloads for Laurens went down. I carried J. H. Powers, Tom Copeland, Joe McDaniel and Truman Leo pard. Albert Williams carried Willie Eichelberger, Maurice Blakely, J. H. Franklin, and Odell Cook. Carolina Milling Co. was there with a nice ex hibit with Frank Waldrep at tending the exhibit. Frank pass ed out to our group a nice needle set, along with pencils. The Governor spoke at the dinner meeting, and of course, said a lot of nice things that were very interesting. He also made comment on his trip to Vietnam, in saying that hog prices are extending around the world. Mr. Stroud, President of the National Livestock and Meat Board in Chicago, made a very interesting talk concerning foods that were in competition with farm meats such as pork and beef. He mentioned the large food concerns, such as Gen eral Mills, who do a lot of re search and are developing many fancy foods that attract child ren. Also, our own Dr. O’Dell, Director of the Extension Ser vice, made some very interest ing comments in winding up the meeting. It was brought out in one of the most important state ments of the day that the hog is one of the best mortgage lift ers of all farm animals. Q. Is there a magnolia tree type that doesn’t bloom. I have two 15-year-olds from nursery stock which have never bloom ed. Can I do something to de velop blooms or should they be cut down? D. R., Laurens. A. We know of no Southern magnolias that don’t bloom. Usually, failure to bloom is associated with very good vege tative growth. Root pruning on younger trees will often force flowering. As the tree ages and growth slows, it should bloom eventually. Don’t cut it down. The foliage alone is too valu able as an ornamental plant. -E. V. Jones, assistant exten sion specialist, horticulture. Q. My white pine trees have a white sacle on limbs and trunks. Is it pine scale? Will it kill the trees? What could I put on it? J. W. R., Greer A. It’s apparently aphids on the limbs and trunk. They suck plant juices and when present in sufficient numbers could kill a tree. Use malathion insecti cide mixed according to direc tions on the label. Check trees, at least on a weekly basis, to see if there is reinfestation. Spray as often as you notice the aphids. When using these and other chemicals, ALWAYS read instructions on the label and observe them completely. - -S. A. Marbut, associate ex tension specialist, forestry. Q. We have an oak tree with troubles, apparently a fungus. A white foamy substance is around the base and some areas have a wet appearance. What’s the Q. My snap beans are a mottl ed yellowish in appearance and leaves finally die. Other plants also are affected, including to matoes and some of the flower ing plants. Check the specimen and tell me what to do. A. Your pest is the two-spot ted spider mite, a general feed er. Try washing the plants with a strong stream of water from the garden hose. It will dislodge many of the spiders and is one of the cheapest ways to attempt control. If you want to go to chemicals, Kelthane (dicoful) is one which may be used on many plants including vege tables. Be sure to observe the waiting periods listed on the la bel for any particular kind of plant. trouble? Is it likely to destroy azalea cuttings around the tree? A. the best diagnosis from a distance is wetwood, slime flux. Say the tree has high blood pressure and is a sick or ganism, but with good care could recover to live for years. This is fermented sap flowing from a branch stub or another weak place in the tree. For treatment, bore small holes into it and in sert a copper pipe to help alle viate pressure inside the tree and carry sap away from the trunk. Remove dead and weak branches and have a tree sur geon repair bark wounds and cover with a dressing. The con dition is not likely to harm the azalea cuttings unless the ma terial exuding from the tree comes in direct contact with them. -- W. C. Nettles, princi pal extension specialist, plant pathology and entomology. at It may be a man’s world but it ’s certainly not that way in the water. Liberty Mutual Insur ance Companies’ statistics show that nearly 85 percent of all drowning victims are male. COTTON farmers are asked to keep close check un their fields for insects. It is recom mended that they spray, or dust, only when it isabsolutelyneces- sary. In fact, we are in hopes that we will not have to spray until the middle of June, in asmuch as we can aggravate the bollwurm problem by killing the ladybug that eats the bollworm egg. ROACHES have become a very hard pest to control if not kept in check. We recommend that you spray behind base boards, kitchen sinks, refrig erators, broom closets, etc., as roaches seek darkness dur ing the day and they usually are found in these areas. Sometimes it is necessary to go into the loft and under a house to con trol them. We have a leaflet roach control, if you would on like a copy, please call or come by.
