TIPS mOM CLEMSON HOME & (EDITOR’S NOTE: Informa tion in this column is provi ded by Extension Service spe cialists and faculty members of Clemson University. Readers are invited to submit questions. Address to: Editor, Home 4 Outdoors, care of this news paper.) Q. We pian to buy a window air conditioning unit and wonder if we’ll need special wiring for it. A. Air conditioning units up to 10,000 and 11,000 BTU capacity per hour are usually manufact ured to operate on 115 volts. This site unit may be plugged into g convenience outlet iMJw circuit isn’t overloaded. Larger capacity units are de signed to operate on 230 volts and a special circuit from the power entrance is run from the box to the unit. -- F. H. Hed- den, Clemson extension en gineer. Q. Big brown rats are coming out of the field and getting into my house; they’re the kind that make tunnels underground. I have put out Decon but it doesn’t seem to kiU them. Can you suggest anything? M.A.R.,Tay lors A. Big brown rats that bur row are probably warf rats. The other large rat is the roof rat. Decon is a trade name for an anticoagulant called War farin which under certain con ditions will cause death of the pest. Check to see if the bait is attractive to the rat, and de termine if the bait is being eaten in sufficient quantities. It must be eaten for several times-- usually on five or more succes sive days. The bait should be available to the rat at all times for five to 15 days. Q. A salesman came by my house singing high praise for waterless cookware. It was so expensive, I wonder if you'd tell me if it really gives more nu tritious meals. A. The best cooking utensils sold in stores rarely cost more than $50-$80 for a complete set. A less expensive set wiU do just as weU--yet thousands of femlltes • -have spent $230 •te $900 lUbtlng-otensils pur chased from door-to-door salesmen. The big seUing pitch for “wa terless” cookware is that it wil conserve vitamins and min erals. In reality a heavy pot with tight fitting lid is a “wa terless" cooker. -- Veronica Carmack, extension home man agement specialist Q. Do you have anything that wiU kill wasps? A. This is a timely question. When wasps are leaving hiber nation in the spring they be come annoying. A similar an noyance period occurs when they’re entering hibernation. There are several effective sprays. You may use three per cent Chlordane or one-half per cent Diazinon or Vapona for aerial or ground nests. Vapona is especially useful because it prevents stings by instantly knocking down the wasp. -- W. C. Nettles, principal exten sion ^ecialist, entomology and plant pathology.
