He was the brother of Mrs. Taylor Martin of Clinton. He was a native of Pickens, a son of the late John Lewis and Elizabeth Hill Thornely. He was a graduate of Presbyterian College and did post-graduate work at the University of North Carolina. He was a veteran and became director of the Birming ham libraries in 1953. He re ceived the Birmingham Festival of Arts literary award in 1958. He was a member of Carolinana Society, the American and Ala bama library associations, the Bunn chapter of EnglishSpeaking Union, the Bibliographic Society of Americans, the Grolier Society and the Presbyterian Church. He was president of Bostic and Thomley Printing Co. and was a contributor to various periodi cals. The family requests that any memorials be made to the Bir mingham Library System. Funeral services will be con ducted in Birmingham with graveside services Thursday at 5 p.m. at Rosemont Cemetery in Clinton. Rev. Alfred L. Bixler will officiate at the graveside services here. J. E. Moore WATERLOO - James Earl Moore, 55, of Waterloo died in Columbia Friday. He was the fa ther of Mrs. Daisy Mae Young of Clinton. Other survivors include his wife, six other daughters, five sons and U grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday at Cedar Grove Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. R. L Campbell Robert Lee Campbell, 57, of Gary Street, died Friday. He was a son of the late Wade and Julia Simpson Campbell. He was a member of Fairview A ME Church and was an employe ofD. E. Tribble Co. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ollie Campbell of Charlotte, N. C.; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Thrift of Clinton and Mrs. Clara Samuels of Charlotte, N. C.; and a brother, Alonzo Campbell of Greenville. Funeral services were held Sunday at Fairview AME Church in Clinton^ Burial was in the church cemetery. Norma Jean Hamilton of Joanna; four sons, W. C., Curtis and Claude Holbert of Clinton and Dallas Holbert of Jonna; three sisters, Mrs. Lucille Waters and Mrs. Clyde Laney of Clinton and Mrs. Pearl Adkins ofWarrenton, Ga.; and a brother, Jack Col- vard of Honea Path. Funeral services were held Thursday in the Church of God of Prophecy, with burial in Rosemont Cemetery. Johnny Johnson Johnny Johnson of Clinton died in Columbia Wednesday, April 8. He was a son of the late Hill and Morriah Johnson and was a member of Friendship AME Church. He was a veteran of World War I. He was a native of Clinton, but lived with a niece, Mrs. Jeanette Glenn, in Pennsyl vania. Funeral services with military rites were heldSunday at Friend ship AME Church. Cor ley of Greenwood; a sister, Mrs. Grady Massey of Charlotte, N. C. ; and 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday at Broad Street United Methodist Church. Burial was in Pinelawn Memory Gardens. Sandra Riddle WATERLOO - Sandra Michelle Riddle, infantdaughter ofDelland Susan Reeder Riddle, died Tues day. She was the great-grand daughter of Mrs. Turner Pin son of Cross Hill. Other survivors are a sister, the grandparents, five other great-gran^arents and a great- great grandmother. Graveside services were held Wednesday at Cross Hill Baptist Church cemetery. Murder e. w. stone /$ Charged In Shooting Mrs. Holbert Mrs. Gertrude B. Holbert, 65, widow of Hubert L. Holbert, died Tuesday, April 7, in Clinton. She had lived in Laurens Coun ty most of her life and was a daughter of the late Wil and Lucy Maynard Colvard Hobert. She was a retired employe of Clinton Mills. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Louise Frazier and Mrs. UNION - E. W. Stone, 89, of 102 E. South St., died Friday. He was a native of Jacks Township near Clinton. A son of the late William A. and Frances Copeland Stone, he had lived in Union since 1905 and had been a hardware mer chant since that time. Survivors include a son, Elbert W. Stone Jr. of Union; a daugh ter, Mrs. Duncan Stokes Felder of Union; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren Funeral services were held Saturday at Grace Methodist Church in Union with burial in the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Clinton. C. D. Benjamin C. D. Benjamin Sr., 74, ofRt. 1, Clinton, Longbranch com munity, died Thursday. He was a lifelong resident of Laurens County, son of the late Ludy Thompson and Fanny Du- Vall Benjamin. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Lang ston Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Leah Martin Benjamin; a son, C. D. Benjamin Jr. of Clinton; a brother, John C. Benjamin of Hartsville; and a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter. Funeral services were held Friday at Langston Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. LAURENS - A 40-year-old Spartanburg County man has been charged with murder in the March 26 shooting death of Landrum Fred Snow, 37, of Rt. 1, Wood ruff, according to Laurens Coun ty Sheriff R. Eugene Johnson. Sheriff Johnson said Willie Burgess of the Reidville com munity was charged in a warrant issued Wednesday night by Mag istrate C. A. Patton of Young’s Township in Laurens County. Snow’s body was found by Spar tanburg and Laurens County law enforcement officers and State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) officer behind an a- bandoned house in the Grays sec tion about two miles inside Lau rens County. Sheriff Johnson said Snow had been missing since March 26, and officers believe the shooting occurred on that date. Burgess was being held in the Spartanburg County jail on a- nother charge when the murder warrant was delivered to Spar tanburg CountySheriff Charles P. Alverson Wednesday night, John son said. Two PC Cadets Win ROTC Grants Two Presbyterian College ROTC cadets--Warren B. Mc Kinney of Greer and Henry J. Winn of Columbia--have been se lected to receive two-year ROTC scholarships during their remaining two years at PC, Col. William B. Tuttle, Jr., announc ed today. He said the grants to these rising juniors will pay for tui tion, textbooks and laboratory fees and also provide a subsis tence allowance of $50 per month. Upon graduation, the recip ients are commissioned as se cond lieutenants and serve a minimum of four years on active duty with the Army. Col. Tuttle, professor of mili tary science at PC, said the Third Army area awarded 142two-year scholarships and also has a pro gram of four-year grants for high school seniors. C. B.
