Cook, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jennings E. Cook, 163 Cypress St., Clin ton, completed Special Forces training Dec. 19 at the John F. Kennedy Center for Special War fare, Ft. Bragg, N.C. Sgt. Cook, who isnowprepared for an assignment with one of the six operational Special Forces groups around the world, re ceived his first four weeks of training in map reading, patrol ling and methods of instructing native personnel. The student then received in struction in his category of the five basic skills found in a Spe cial Forces detachment, medical, communications, intelligence and operations, engineering, and de molitions and weapons. The sergeant concluded his training with a four-week course in Special Forces tactics and techniques. He was taught the ad vantages of psychological war fare and the necessity for gat hering and assessing intelligence data before infiltrating and ac tually operating in an area. Dun away, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. James J. Dunaway, Clinton, took part in an Army Air Defense Command “Short Notice Annual Practice” (SNAP), Feb. 2-4 at the Yukon Missile Range near Fair banks, Alaska. He is a member of Battery A, 4th Battalion, 43d Artillery at Ft. Richardson, Alaska. Participating units are given only 48 hours warning before be ing aiflifted to the range. While at the site, crewmen fire live missiles against radio-con trolled aerial targets. The annual testing is designed to keep air defense units in a state of con stant readiness to perform their missions. Spec. 4 Dunaway entered the Army in February 1969, received basic training at Ft. Gordon, Ga., and was stationed at Ft. Bliss, Tex., before arriving overseas in July 1969. His wife, Sue, lives at 119 N. Livingston St., Clinton. coJS Rev. HERBERT SPAUGH It is high time for man, the created, to learn to know his Creator. Learning the lesson is hard, and becoming harder. In this scientific era man has devised an abundance of mecha nical equipment to serve him. But this equipment, these machines and gadgets have away of breaking down. We’ve become accustomed to calling the ser viceman to repair broken-down equipment. But these servicemen are becoming so scarce that we are going to have to learn to repair some of them ourselves or junk them. Spiraling inflation is making it more difficult for us to buy replacements. All of us are facing this problem. WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF WHAT WE HAVE OR WE WILL LOSE IT. The same thing is happening to man spiritually. We’ve been calling on servicemen to restore our shattered emotions. But there aren’t enough servicemen. Psy chiatrists are overloaded. Mental hospitals are full to overflowing. But regrettably our churches are not. Church members are calling their spiritual serviceman, the minister, for personal attention to help them. But there are not enough of these. We are going to have to learn to service our own lives. The first step is go back to church and get what you can there. Learn to take care of that immortal soul. It is the mainspring of your life. Too many of us are waiting until the mainspring breaks before we call for help. The Bible is still the best man ual for preserving spiritual health. Study it regularly. Learn the cause of your difficulties, and correct them. There are many who say they cannot understand the Bible. That is simply a confession of unwil lingness to try. There have never been so many modern versions of the Bible that make it in telligible to modern man. Two of these are paperbacks issued by the American Bible Society, “Good News for Modern Man* and “The Inside Story”.
