Feb. 5, 1970—1-C Legislation Outlaws Palm Reading Legislation outlawing palm reading or fortune telling in Lau rens County was introduced last week in the State House of Repre sentatives. Also introduced last week were bills to provide for microfilming court records and simplifying tax lien filing. Concerning the legislation to outlaw palm reading, Rep. David S. Taylor commented, *1 don’t think in the 20th Century there is any place for fortune telling and palm reading in our county.” Concerning the legislation on microfilming, Rep. Taylor point ed out that funds are provided for microfilming equipment in the current Laurens County sup ply bill. He said the legislation introduced last week will permit the county to put its records on film. Rep. Taylor said the micro filming has been provided to help insure the county against loss of county records. He said that a fire in the courthouse last year would have destroyed all the county's records and “it would have been complete chaos.” The other legislation intro duced last week will allow filing of state tax liens in one entry at the clerk of court’s office. Currently, three different en tries are required. Taylor said this legislation would reduce by two-thirds the am ount of time re quired for filing. Henry Jamec and the Spartanburg Symphony Orchestra offered Laurens County children 45 minutes f perfectly magnificent music. The six compositions were se lected from am ng the many types of music which man has evolved, and included the "Star Spangled Banner," a patriotic anthem, the introduction to Act III of W'jg- ner's " L hengrin," operatic tlieme, Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Mail's Desiring, " religious mu sic, Bartok's "Roumanian Folk Dances,’ Tchaikovsky Is . “Swan Lake.’ excerpts frofiTTailet mu sic, and a suite from Rodger's “Sound of Music,” musical come dy. The whole format of the con cert was very carefully planned to afford the children attending it, the maximum l)enefits, through a broad spectrum of music, with an informative narration by the conductor and the stimulation of audience participation. Mr. Jamec ran the tightly con trolled performance with the ease of a master, addressing the audience on their own level and encouraging their active re sponse to his remarks. He even provided an excellent and valu able lesson on concert manners as he set the guidelines for the children’s behaviour, couched in terms they could readily under stand. Our children, in Clinton, in Laurens, all over' the county, have a birth-right to enjoy man kind’s musical heritage. It is de voutly to be hoped that the Lau rens County Fine Arts Associa tion can join with School Dis tricts 55 and 56 and W'hitten Vil lage to sponsor more and more of these cultural events to give our youngsters these enriching op portunities.
