CLIFTON HEATON INTERESTING FACTS By Tom Plaxico Here are some facts about Christmas you may be interested in. The tradition of sending Christmas cards is less than 100 years old. The first Christmas card were not printed until 1875. Did you know the Christmas carol “Silent Night” was written by a 26-year-old prieet, Fath er Joseph Mohr, and an equally young school teach er, Xavier Gruber, in 1818 in the little town of Obendorf, Austria. In the last century, oddly enough, most {icopie used the expression “Happy Christmas" instead of “Merry Chritmaa.” But whichever way it’s said, we extend jov- ous holiday greetings to yours. I Moore, y501 Blalock Dr., Joanna was recent ly named by The Citadel to the 1970 Edition of Who’s Who A- mong Students in American Uni versities and Colleges. In being selected he achieved a coveted distinction among seniors in uni versities and colleges across the nation. Selections for “Who’s Who" were recently approved by Gen. Hugh P. Harris, president of The Citadel, after a special commit tee had scrutinized the records of members of the Corps of Ca dets who have excelled militarily, academically, and in extra-cur ricular activities. In its recom mendations, this committee ho nored cadets who had proved their all-round abilities as Citadel men. Cadet Moore is a senior at the military college and holds the rank of lieutenant colonel within the South Carolina Corps of Ca dets and serves as second bat talion commander. A Dean’s List student, he is the recipient of the Daniel Scholarship awarded in the amount of $800 per year for four years at The Citadel. In his junior year, he was one of 14 students to gain coveted mem bership in the Junior Sword Drill -- a precision saber unit. He is enrolled in theArmyROTC Program and recently won the coveted designation of Disting- usished Military Student. Major ing in mathematics, he is a mem ber ofthe Athletic Advisory Com mittee, the Presidential Cadet Advisory Committee, the Regi mental Committee, and the Mathematics Club. Alpha Lambda Delta, honorary sorority for freshmen women with a 3.5 grade point ration invited her into member-, ship, and she served as an offi cer. In her junior year she was invited into an honorary education sorority, Kappa Delta Pi, and was also a member of Council for Exceptional Children. I hope you are enjoying your holidays too. Sloan Elected Vice President U.S. Farm Bureau South Carolina Farm Bureau President David H. Sloan of Mar ion, last week was elected vice- president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, by voting de legates of the member State F arm Bureaus. Sloan succeeds Walter L. Ran dolph of Montgomery, Ala., who resigned because of ill health after serving as vice-president since 1953. The election came at the closing sessions here of the golden anniversary convention of the Federation in the Washington Hilton Hotel. A group of 80 South Carolinians attended the annual meeting. Among these were Mrs. Agnes Bailey, Secretary of Lau rens County Farm Bureau, who won first place this year in the State Farm Bureau Communica tions contest, also Mr. and Mrs. J. Herman Power. Mr. Power is State Director for Laurens Coun ty. Charles B. Shuman, Sullivan, Illinois, was re-elected president of the AFBF for a two-year term. He was first elected president in December, 1954. McAlister Serves In S. Vietnam 1 Navy Seaman Apprentice Roddy L. McAlister, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter McAlister of 101 Milling Ave., Clinton, is serving with U. S. Naval Mobile Con struction Battalion One (MCB One), in Vietnam, MCB One ar rived in Vietnam for its fourth consecutive eight-month deploy ment in July of this year.
