Know The Terminology In Buying Fine Jewelry BY HELEN C. CAMP Extension Home Economist Nothing makes a girl feel more feminine than an exquisite piece of fine jewelry. It’s an expression of her taste that she can wear with pride, a sentimental remind er of a special someone, an im portant fashion accessory, and an investment that will never lose its value. Watches, gold jewelry, and birthstones are the favorite choi ces for this gift-giving season. If you’re a lucky one on the re ceiving end, you should know exactly what you have and how to care for it. If you’re buying, it’s wise to know a little termino logy. But please, don’t be misled by “incredible bargains"! Buy only from a reputable jeweler. A matter of time: Watches have become important fashion acces sories. Elegant or sporty, de mure or a little zany, a watch can be an expression of your personality. The new “fun" wat ches are great if it’s a “look* you're after, but don’t expect THE CHRONICLE, Clinton, S. C., Dec. 25, 1969—5-B HEAD COUNT . . . "Just born” doll heads are inspected at the huge New York City plant of the Ideal Toy Corp. as the first step in the intricate beautification project that leads to the arms and hearts of little girls on Christmas morning. At peak of production, the com pany turns out up to 15,000 dolls per day in addition to a wide variety of toys and games. THE CHRISTIAN CANDLE The Christian candle, symbolic of Christ, "The Light Of The World”, origi nated from sacred Roman and Hebrew Customs. Tapers of tallow from ani mal fats later were candles made of beeswax, as it be- came more plentiful. In many nations these were held erect by metal holders claiaQed , qnto the branches of uf? ClWIIrtmas tree. Sanci- fied they were believed to radiate love and friendship, to dispel hatered and dis cord, just as our electrified counterparts today. Prayer For Peace From The Moon This is the Christmas Prayer offered from lunar orbit by Apollo 8 Commander Frank Borman: "Give us, O God, the vision which can see Thy love in the world in spite of human failure. "Give us the faith to trust the goodness in spite of our ignorance and weakness. "Give us the knowledge that we may continue to pray with understanding hearts, and show us what each one of us can do to set forward the coming of the day of universal Peace. Amen." FEWER TOY GUNS Toys under the Christ mas tree might be aimed a little closer to peace on earth, because, sales of realistic- looking toy guns have dropped rather sharply. Children are still in terested in the guns, how ever, parents are not en couraging their young ones to "see how it works". Interest has turned to basic games and educa tional toys. them to keep good time or run for very long. A good watch, however, can last a lifetime and will never be “out of it." A quality watch has at least 17 working jewels. These jewels are synthetic and worth only a few cents, but they are vital to the efficiency of your watch, as they prevent metal-to-metal contact of the delicate parts. No watch without a jeweled lever is a quality watch, no matter how many other jewels it has. MVWVVWWVVVVWVVVVVVW Bkssuyu Joy and blesaingt to all, during the Holiest of Seasons. GILDER ft WEEKS DRUGS The Right Drag Store Joanna, S. C. — WMSM tfVVWWWWWWWWVW No watch, except a specially made skin-diver’s or astronaut’s watch (which you’re not likely to be buying), can be “proffed" a- gainst watch, stock, dust, or mag netism. Special coostructioos can make a watch resistant to these things, but never permanent or absolutely. Time-Saving Care: Even the tiniest watch contains over 100 delicate parts. Take special care! Do wind your watch at the same time every day, even when you’re not wearing it. (A self-winding watch is exactly that. It winds it self with your arm movements.) Do keep it away from perfume and powder. Wrap it up if you put it in your purse or drawer. Don’t place your watch near a television set. It can be affected by the electrical field. Don’t try to fix it yourself. Don’t shake or jar it or take off the back. Don’t expose it to extreme heat and cold. (Watch that cooking steam.) Do give your new watch a “breaking in” period for a few weeks after you’ve first put it on. on. Even if it seems okay, have it checked by your jeweler. Do have it completely cleaned and checked at least every two years. The Midas Touch: Gold is rightfully called “The King of Metals*. Since caveman days, gold has been worshipped and hoarded. Entire civilizations have been built with it, and de stroyed by the greed for it. Once our royalty was permitted to wear it, but today the “most precious metal on earth” is available in some form to everyone. Gold is measured in karats. Twenty-four karat being pure gold (and too soft for jewelry), 10K means that the gold in the article is by weight 10/24thofthe article. The rest of the weight is made up by nickel, copper, or silver. The most common weights are 22K, 19K, 14K, and 10K. Brushed, matte, and Florentine are names for types of finishes. Remember, “all that glitters is not gold”. If it is karat gold, it must be stamped as such. Gold-filled or gold-plated means a less precious metal covered with layers of karat gold. It’s the “next best thing’ to karat gold and is less expensive. Elec troplated gold is hardly gold at all, but a metal flashed with gold in thicknesses measured by miUionths of an inch. If you see an unmarked gold article, it’s sure to be electroplated gold. Keep your gold clean with a prepared jewelry cleaner, or wash it in warm soapy water, rinse, and wipe dry with a soft cloth. * * * WE Will BE CLOSED DEC. 25th W-D BRAND GOVERNMENT GRADE A' r TOMS It t« 10 lb. til* STORE HOURS Open Till 9:00 P.
